I know the FAA says you can't mount a gun to a plane but a truck? I dunno. Nice technical you got there guys, I might have figure a way to put my .50 (bolt action unfortunately) on my jeep to try to keep up. |
A PKM would be the most realistic....but a M2 Browning or DShK "51 cal" would roxxor. A 90mm or 106mm RR would be a bit much though.![]() IIRC Chad used ATGM equipped Toyota trucks to whup up on Khadafi's tanks when Libya invaded. How about a air compressor powered arrow gun ala Road Warrior? |
That would definitely give it the Mad Max(beyond thunderdome) look |

God I love Toyota Pick ups. I still remember riding with my Dad in the flood of 86 in our SR-5 Diesel with the headlights shining through water and it just trucking on through. Scary stuff now that I look back on it but when I was there I thought it was a grand old time. Justin W. |

Man you guys are going all out on this thing. While you have it torn all apart, there is plenty of fabbing that can be done. Cough, cough...smallblock chevy...cough, cough. Bartering for AR parts would be a little slice of heaven. Keep us posted with plenty of pics. |
I really hadn't even considered getting another type of motor. I am looking to get a rebuilt 22r or have the one I have rebuilt. Hmmm, wonder what I would be looking at(for information purposes only |

The Chapman Academy (now Greene Valley) in Columbia has an old Toyota Land Cruiser that Ray Chapman drove there in 1979 when he started the school. It has a small block Chevy in it. We used to use it for classes years ago, and it always took a little work to get it running for our annual event we did there. I never paid too much attention to how much fabrication was needed but it was a pretty slick vehicle. It would be worth fixing up if it didn't have so many bullet holes in it. |

The smallblock chevy is probably the cheapest engine overall due to popularity. The place where you would run in to money is having to get a tranny as well and matching up the driveshaft, rear end, etc. It looks like you are doing a great job so far. Now, I'm just talking but here but that truck with a mild 350 and a TH350 with a ratchet shifter would be sweet I took on a similar project a couple years ago and need to get back at it. It was my late grandpa's truck, and after he passed it was sold to a cousin-in-law who trashed it. I put a 3" front 4" rear drop on it, put new panels all around, cab corners, shot it in primer and started rebuilding the interior. As soon as my gun addiciction takes a back seat, it will be time for paint and, yes, a small block. Mad respect for the work you're doing, its not easy work, but it sure can be rewarding and fun! |
| If you're gonna put a new engine in it, why not try to find a diesel to put in it? You'll lose a little horsepower but the torque will be great and everybody knows torque is what really gets the work done. For economy, simplicity, longevity, and cool, gasoline doesn't have sh*t on diesel. I still can't understand why diesels aren't more popular in the USA as opposed to Europe. It's truely a shame, IMO. |
A lot of people find diesel work to be a PITA for DYI. Carbed gas engines are simple enough for most anyone to work on. Keep us updated on the project. |

Hey, I found a donor engine for ya. Anything is possible with a little creativity... and the good old "blue wrench". http://omaha.craigslist.org/pts/255927046.html Pull off the parts you want, then blast-away at the shell!!!! Not too many people use a LEXUS for target practice. Rick_NE |

If ya put in a Vulcan, let me know. I used to remove/rebuild/reinstall those in aircraft years ago. That motor should be all you ever need in that light of a truck. Not sure it will haul as much as the Surburban, but at least you will be able to park it anywhere ya want. |
The bullet holes add character - you could call it "patina". Leaving them would add coolness factor far beyond a slicked up body with new paint. |
You might try posting over at YotaTech to see if anyone can hook you up with a 22R engine. That truck brings back memories for me. My dad had one when we lived in Oregon and that's when I fell in love with Toyotas. I've got a 4Runner now, but would love to find and old pickup like you've got or an old FJ-40. Anyway, good luck with your project. It looks like a ton of fun! |
