| Post them here. There is going to be a slaughter beginning tomorrow at the ole Overstreet farm. |
|
I'll be out there tomorrow morning sleeping in my favorite tree. Hopefully I will get caught up on some much needed rest before bambi show up and wakes me. Oh yeah, weapon of choice for this year will be AR15 A2 type firing 65gr game king. Back up will be a Ruger Redhawk in .44 mag (300gr XTP). Come to think of it my pistol might actually be more powerful than my rifle. Hmmmmm..... |
|
How early does everyone have to get up? I'm guessing the overstreets just roll out of bed and open the back door. This year I have to head out about 3:30am. I NEED to find closer hunting grounds! Oh well hopefully I'll have a picture for you, otherwise I'll be reading Flags of our Fathers in my stand all weekend. Justin W. |
Nice. Whereabouts was this taken? |
|
I got one this morning but I just got in and I am beat and I still have to get up at 4am to go out again. It was only a three pointer with average size body but the cool part is I took it with my .44 mag redhawk while it was running! Even better, I have witnesses!! My buddy and his stepson saw the whole thing. It was totally awesome. BTW, a 300gr XTP loaded around 1300 fps does some damn serious damage to a deer. I was amazed at the destruction. Pictures to follow as soon as I can get them online. |
Northeast Missouri in the Ralls/Pike county area. |
| My first deer (and first time hunting). 8 point buck taken with my CMMG middy. I was only in the woods for 15 minutes when I shot it. http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g200/moteggy/MitchAR8PointBuck.jpg |
| That's right...forgot about that DERP. Keep those pics coming!!! I considered going back out next weekend for a doe using my AR, but with a larger options to chose from, I just can't talk myself into it. I'd feel pretty bad if one got away from me due to ballistic inadiquicy. |
You SUCK! What was the range? Did you use the EOthingy to engage him? Were his friends suppressed? |
| Good work CAV99!!! it looks like your work is done here and I congradulate you on the first set of graphic photos. I would like to request you either head shoot everything else or use a pistol (preferably your HK). I used a 375 ultra mag this weekend no kills to report as of yet. I missed my only shot on a running deer. I had brought muffs due to the gun having a brake, however the rate of speed in which said animal was traveling provided a limited window of opportunity & I proceeded w/o them and lived to regret it. I'll probably use the 375UM next weekend, for safety. If given an option I will shoot it facing @ or away. Well, I'd better get off of here and get on my combine, that hay wont bail its self. |
Duke, you point out a good and often over looked aspect concerning supression of enemy forces. |
| Noticed some of the deer that appear to have been dressed, didn't get dressed all the way up to their neck. We always go from the tounge to the a-hole to get the windpipe, etc. out. Is this not usual? I assume everyone removes the scent bags first? Also, the lower intestine was severed on a blown out rib...we flushed it out before taking it to be processed, but is this a bad thing? |
I gut mine from a-hole to as much esophagus I can pull/cut out. Tarsal glands always come off first. If I am going to mount it I stop down low so the cape doesn't get tore up. Then take it home and I hang it up by back legs in the garage , start skinning it , cape it if I want, then I start cutting the meat off of it. Takes a whole 30 minutes or so to cut up your own deer. |
|
JackalAR- What you do is not unusual, however it's to much cutting if you ever want to mount the head. I always try to avoid cutting the skin along the neck as a matter of practice in case I ever get one that ends up going to the taxidermist. There are many ways to do it. Some hang the deer while they do it , some do it on the ground. Doing in on the ground on an incline to let it drain as you go works best for me. As for the scent bags, there are varying opinions on this. Some people say if you leave them alone they won't hurt anything. If you know what you are doing, then go ahead and take them out. The only thing you don't want to do is touch the glands and then touch the meet. My processor had told me that it does'nt hurt a thing to leave them on and let them take care of it. Others may strongly disagree. As far as puncturing the intestine, it happens to the best of them. Just wash it out and then let it hang, should'nt hurt a thing. |
Cool pictures. I would love to witness one of those battles in real life. |
Damn, that is a nice one Holeshot, where did you get him at |
Thanks Gary! This is the exception. Normally the deer aren't that good. I just got lucky. We are still recovering from a lot of poaching that used to go on there. It's a family (in laws) farm just west of Salem, Mo. Thats cool getting one with your Redhawk. And running at that! I still haven't shot at one with my Super Redhawk yet. I think I am going out again this weekend. So I may carry it then. Where did you do your hunting? Also, what happened to the original posters, CMMG, and the promises of mass destruction! Don't keep us waiting guys. |
I made the mistake of shooting the first nice size buck that came along first thing in the morning. Went out in the afternoon to get a doe and all I seen was bucks and several that were a lot bigger than the one I got. |
| Figures don't it? I want to take the AR out next week for my doe, but I can't quite talk myself into using it when I have several larger options, but they belong to my grandfather and all have scopes. I wanted to try out the EOTech and irons. Would have been REAL handy in taking my buck. |
Don't feel too bad. I know your pain. I feel a lot of it is just plain luck. I only started hunting about 19 years ago. I never took a shot for the first ten. There was nothing to shoot at. Talk about a glutton for punishment! Like I said before, there was a lot of poaching going on all year. Didn't leave much for us come hunting season. Now with better gates up, the deer are making a good come back. |
|
Nice deer! You said it was getting dark but the picture is lit therefor I assume you didn't skin him til the next day? Anyone else have processing preferences? We usually field dress take it home, skin and quarter it. Meat goes in the fridge for a day or two then we do all the deboning and cut up steaks, stew meat, and hamburger. Justin W. |
At least you didn't miss! I saw 5 deer asses this season as I kept being seen first. I actually managed to find one doe I scared up and took a shot with my SA58 but it appears that I hit a branch on the way in and it deflected. I saw some junk flying in the air between us after the muzzel flash. She just looked at me and then tore ass down the draw and over the hill. Two hours of searching showed no signs, hair, blood, bone, shit, nothing. I lost her trail over the top of the hill. Second season with no deer but at least I did see some. I know where to be next opening day. I plan to try again in December though. |

Heard plenty of shots being taken in the distance.
