Hey this is my first post! Yeah!
I have been here for a while but have used a lot of searches and reading. Good stuff!

First of I am close to buying a mid length flat top AR for my first.
I called CMMG (living in Missouri and I hear great things about them I though it was a good idea)
and I wanted to probably get the mid length upper flat top with Gov profile and 6 position lower and toss on a BUIS (for an eventual aimpoint or EOtech) but they said you have to pay excise tax even if you buy separate upper and lower (to save money). I though it was only if you bought a complete rifle? So if you do need to pay excise tax on the upper and lower then it would be smart to just get the whole package which is 1025$. I think a good price for a good gun but I'm in college and will be going to medical school soon so I don't have much money. I'm poor :(
So I guess I'm now trying to decide if I should go with the CMMG or the Stag lower and RRA upper on the EE for 225$ and 435$ respectively both new and toss on a BUIS for a total of around 750$
It tough because I like the fact I will live close to CMMG and if I ever have a problem it sounds like they are a stand up bunch of people. I guess I will just have to sit on it for a while.
Sorry for the long post!

Just Buy the upper and lower at different times.
MY rifle is all CMMG, but it took me a year to get the parts together.

But honestly the stuff you get with a complet rifle from CMMG really negates the extra cost of the excise tax.

I've got an Eagle Arms AR and a DPMS upper on Grizzly lower.  Now they're both fantastic rifles and even though I'd say the DPMS is the better barrel free floated and all that there is probably more value in the EA-15 just because it is a factory build.  So while you are spending more in the event you resell it there will be more inherent value in a CMMG weapon versus a kit build.  Or at least it seems that way to me.

So if they sell me the upper and then I walk out and walk back in and buy the lower then I don't have to pay the excise tax? (90$) awesome!
The deal with the extra stuff from CMMG is that I really don't have much use for it besides the mag's. I already have 2 plastic cases which is enough. I want to get a really good 3 point or single point sling anyway so a cheep one is useless. My dad has a factory colt which came with a cleaning kit so I don't need another one. Plus my dad has around 20 30rounders but of courses 2 wouldn't hurt. h
CMMG A3 mid length, gov profile (which I like) and BUIS for 615$
CMMG lower with collapsible for 265$
Total of 880$

OR

RRA mid length upper on EE for 435$
Stag lower on EE for 225
Arms BUIS for around 90$
Total of 750$

I would say the quality of CMMG and customer service would account for 130$ what do you all think?

Thanks again for all the help!

yeah, I'd go the CMMG route, especially since you are in Columbia any problems are 30 minutes away for a fix versus shipping something off or just being stuck with replacing it.

Justin

Tell em I sent ya so I get my super referal discount!  (yes there is no real discount)

Go with the CMMG.

They will bend over backwards to make anything right.
