How many of you missourians gonna be out there tomorrow AM trying to pop a cap in bambis arse? I sure will be, I can't decide whether to use the Garand or the AR though. Decisions decisions....
|
| Well, not tomorrow, but the following weekend I'll be out there. Still trying to decide whether or not I want to hunt with the M4 but I'll probably end up going with the classic Remington Gamemaster 760 ... Pump action .30-06 a gift from my father-in-law. I'll probably tote the HK as a side-arm and bring the .22 to plink with. Should be a blast. |

Question: What is the magazine restriction in MO for rifles? 5 rounds or 3-4? It varies state to state I know. I think Armalite and Bushmaster sells 5 round hunting magazines. I wonder if the conservation folks would allow a normal mag as long as you only load in 2 or 3 rounds. Oh, and nice deer. I need to get my hunter's safety permit at some point and give this a try. All the hunting I've done has been on private land against pigeon/crow type infidels. I want to try duck hunting at some point. themao

regs read "Methods Prohibited: In use or possession Self-loading firearms with the capacity of more than 11 cartidges in magazine and chamber combined." as read out of the 2004 fall deer and turkey hunting regulations and information. Which can be picked up at any walmart, conservation office, etc... |

What Gnarlyfeet said with an addenum. I use a 20 round mag that I have blocked to hold 10 rounds by inserting a piece of wood underneath the follower. I.E., remove floorplate, trim wood to fir inside mag spring then using trial and error trim length till only 10 or less rounds will fit in mag when re-assembled. Basically the same thing they do to limit shotgun tubes for duck hunters. |

Thanks for the info. I was just curious. In IL where I'm from, rifles aren't allowed (unless that has changed). It's all shotgun with slugs. Man, what we need are 6.8 mm SPR AR-15s complete with a suppressor and a night vision scope for all those deer running around St. Louis County. A .223 SPR with 77 grain bullets would probably do the damn job as well. I have a friend who almost ran into a deer not to long ago around Wildwood. These crazy rich whackos that overpopulate West County are creating a road and health hazard. The MO Conservation Dept. isn't helping matters either. themao

I have family in Iowa, It's the same way (last time I know). Shotgun only. My uncle got a nice 12ga barrel for Christmas one year, I thought how strange! Then they explained that it was shotgun only. Who would use a shotgun. Around here I can understand it's so brushy but in Iowa all you can see corn fields for miles.

Well, got my first deer last Saturday at around 0700. We were hunting on a farm near Springfield, MO. There were five of us spread out among 270 acres. Got to my spot by a pond at around 0630 while the sun was just starting to come up. It was chilly that morning but not altogether cold. Every once and awhile a gentle wind would lightly shake the tops of the trees causing the morning's moisture and drizzle collected in whatever leaves remained on the trees to drop lightly to the forest floor. The pond right next to the two trees I was standing by showed no ripples from the breeze blowing through the tops of the trees and there was absolute solitude. Very peaceful ... Until around 0645 that morning. A shot rang out to the east of me. It was obvious by the proximity of the blast that one of our hunting group at least got a shot off. Pissed that I wasn't the first one to take a deer that morning, I refocused my concentration and waited. It seemed like I was in a prime spot. Around 15 minutes later, to my west, I heard a crashing and thumping sound. Something was booking it through the brush to my west. I caught a glimpse of a white tail flying through the brush. A logging road ran near the pond and produced a shallow bend that went off to the right of the pond. A second later, the buck burst out on to the logging road and was looking the other direction! I thought he might be coming to get a drink at the pond so I thought I'd very carefully get some cover behind one of the larger trees. Rifle in hand, I started to move closer to my cover when the buck suddenly turned his head right towards me. Almost simultaneously, the white tail shot up and I could see his flanks tense as he tried to take flight from his perceived threat. I knew I had no time to loose ... I threw up the .30-06 and let him have it. I don't recall even hearing the muzzle blast but the recoil into my shoulder and the short burst out of the barrell of the rifle in the early morning light was beautiful. Had I hit him? I walked up the logging road a little bit trying to catch sight of a blood puddle but found nothing! No way did I just miss this buck ... I looked and looked but the morning light was still a little too dim to be sure I missed. I headed back to the tree and waited until I had a little more light to work by. I headed back up the trail, this time going farther and I found it! Now my blood was really pumping ... I tracked the blood trail for around 7 to 10 yards down the side of a hill in the forest brush and then came upon my first deer. I'm not an expert at "scoring" a deer's rack but it seemed to me to be a 7 to 8 point buck depending upon how such scoring is done. I may have scored to my favor. Regardless, the veteran hunters around me said he was a very nice buck and I'd have to agree. He's getting processed right now. I'm hooked. A fun time had by all. |

Thanks for the positive comments, guys. I love reading and so that's probably what influenced the manner in which I recalled the story ... That and I just remember everything about it in that manner. It was quite fun. There's nothing like experiencing Missouri's outdoors. I love this state. When I field dressed my first deer, I was a little apprehensive only because I wanted to do a good job. I was by myself when I had to field dress him so I guess I'd give myself a "C" grade ... The veteran hunters had to have me polish a few things up on him. I was proud not to have sliced the intestines but I did knick the stomach ![]() I thought I remembered hearing that MO was going to open a second season here soon as well ... Anyone hear anything about that? I suppose I could check the Conservation Department's home page. |

Dude, thats an awsome telling of the story. Sounds like a beautiful morning and a really cool first kill. Of course as long as I've known you you had a gift for writing things. Awsome shot! So anyone know about this second season. I'm going to have to get off my ass and go with you guys. If there is a second season I'm going to spend some money. My only acceptable rifle is my DPMS AR. My SKS has an issue with the front sight and I cant hit shit even at 50 yards. Can't zero either since it's a little bent. I ordered some Federal Gold Medal 69gr HPBT as I read they are pretty effective for deer. I need to zero my scope for them though. Does that sound like a cartrige that will do the job? |

I got two deer this year. A really really small doe, probably just lost it spots this year. And I got the nicest buck ever. Here's a pic of the rack: http://home.earthlink.net/~bdogan/images/deer.jpg |
