We're looking at a potential move to Jackson, MS (I may or many not have an interview this week). We're thinking about north of Jackson - maybe Ridgeland, Madison, or if the school districts are OK, somewhere in the "sticks" nearby (I'd like a few acres and a workshop ideally).
Most of the feedback folks have given me relates to "Don't get shot!"
What do you guys think? |

You'll love the Madison area, easy commute from there. Just stay out of Jackson Prime. There's a lot of areas that make up the 'Jackson area' and most are fine, such as Madison, Ridgeland, Flowood, Brandon, Richland, Byram... You don't want to go into South or Central Jackson. Nolo lives there and can you a MUCH better overview than I can. I live about 100 miles east in Meridian. |
| I grew up in Florence now living in Liberty. Florence is about 12 miles down Hwy 49 from Jackson and has a good school system and is a nice area to live. Any of the other areas mentioned would be good also. Most of Jackson would not be a good choice due to the crime rate but there are some areas mostly in NE Jackson that are good. However, I believe the school system would lead you elsewhere. |

I would live in the worst neighborhood in New Orleans before I would live in Jackson. lol. pretty true. although i don't even like to go to N.O. You boys need to take this outside? LOL! There are places you don't go in Keller, TX or Ruston, LA for that matter.

I really like Madison. Schools are great, Traffic isn't bad, Crime isn't all that bad. We have a Chic Filet and Krystal right up the road.(Important where ever you live) Nice Library system, Good shopping areas close by.
I work all over the state and see most parts of most towns. There are some parts of downtown Jackson where you see blocks of abandoned buildings and it feels like a war zone. Don't go there. Me an another guy were stopped at a red light near one such place and a guy was on the corner openly selling illegal substances within sight of a school. I feel out of place there. |

Driving to the airport is always interesting in RSN I ain't skeered - I grew up on the South side! ![]() The gas station on the corner of MLK and Farmerville St. has one stop shopping. Gas, beer, cigarettes, snacks, grass, blow, guns, womerns... |

Ok now.. the lesser preferred areas of Ruston are relative to the rest of the city. I dont feel uncomfortable going through there. I'm not going to take a casual Sunday walk down MLK, but I'm not throwing a handgun up on the dash either.
Jackson on the other hand.... |

Most importantly:
There are two rifle/pistol ranges around Jackson - Turcotte, near Canton (public range run by Dept of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks) about 30 mins northwest of Jackson, and Magnolia Rifle & Pistol Club, a private range in Byram about 20 mins south of Jackson. The main gun shops include: Surplus City in Clinton, Van's in (?)Florence Monterey the sticks, Bass Pro, most Wal Marts, Great Southern Firearms in Pearl, Discount Hunting and Fishing in Brandon, various pawn shops in and around Jackson, etc. Hope this helps. |

Quoted: MS sucks. And AL blows.... I don't know why Bamans have gotten so caustic towards MS in the last few years, I guess it's the only way they can build themselves up by tearing down their neighbors. Btw Bama, you're attitude is sounding more & more like a yankee... |
