Guys, Anyone know of any ranges in the area? Duane |

Go out Owl's Hollow Road off of Meighan Blvd. About 10 miles out (SWAG) is a Dept of Conservation (?) run range. 100 and 200 yards (IIRC). You have to have a valid hunting license or (maybe) a CCW. Sorry the details are so sketchy, I've been there once a few years ago. I heard there were some instances of firearm ripoffs, although that came from an employee of another range who may have heard it thru the grapevine, etc. Anyway, you can park your car near the benches and could lock your weapon in your trunk if alone. |
The Gadsden/Etowa County public range is a nice range! REALLY nice. It does have a 200 yard range and _plenty_ of tables, etc. But you're wrong about needing a hunting license or ccw. Unlike all the other public ranges which are on WMA land, this one used to be a private club and isn't on WMA land... therefore no need for a hunting license or anything else. I've been there probably a couple of hundred times over the last ten years and have talked to the sheriff's department people up there, so I'm positive about this. Never had a single problem there. Ever. Not even back before the county took it over. Back then it wasn't nearly as nice or well kept, but back then you could shoot out to 300 yards, so I guess it was sort of a trade-off when the county got it and separated it into several ranges with a much bigger, nicer parking area. All in all, I guess I prefer it the way it is now with everything separated. If you go on wednesday, the county has - I'm guessing - work release guys - up there with the sheriff's department doing range cleanup and maintenance, but even then, since the 25, 50, 100 and 200 yard ranges are all separate, you can still just shoot on a part they're not working on at any given moment. Here's a link to a thread where I posted some pix and a link to an online map... just scroll down... the info is near the bottom of page one (it's the last post on the page): www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=8&f=31&t=277934 I have a few more pix if you'd like to see them, but I think what I posted in the other thread will give you a good idea. From the gadsden end of Owl's Hollow Road, it's roughly 7 miles up on the left. Oh, and recently the county has seen fit to "upgrade" owl's hollow road from a beat up old surface treated - but paved - road with lots of pot holes to a nice new chert unpaved road. Believe it or not though, it's currently less bumpy than it was before. |
