Where is a good place to buy reloading supplies (powder, primers, bullets) locally, or is it better to get the stuff online? I know that you cn negate the explosives charge on shipping by buying the powder from like, the FOP or Zero up in Cullman. specifically, .223 |
midway usa buy in bulk once you find out what coponets you need |

I'm curious about this one myself. The supplies I brought with me from GA (where reloading supplies were commonly available in my area) is going to dwindle quickly when I get my brass supply built back up and get some new projectiles for Christmas. I had even thought about asking if there was any interest in a group buy on HAZMAT items to try to get the price down some... my plan was to do this some time after the credit card bills come in from Christmas shopping and family travel (and hunting trips I saw a limited stock at the FOP while I was there. Are there any other reloading supply retailers in the area? I'm more interested in buying powder and primers than anything else... -Hobbit EDIT: Can someone tell me more about Zero? I'm unfamiliar with them. |
natchezss is spliting the hazmat cost when you buy powder from them |
Not trying to bust any bubbles but..... I just don't see the point in reloading for a regular service grade AR. I mean, if you're reloading for accuracy in you target grade AR that's one thing, but my AR gets either XM193 or lesser surplus ammo. Truthfully, I'd sooner shoot Wolf through my AR than reload for it. I do reload for my 300RUM, 454 Casull, 44 mag, and 10mm. These firearms are a lot pricier to shoot and to me are more interesting to shoot. Besides, shooting 10 rounds out of an AR is ho-hum. Shooting 10 rounds out of say a 454 Casull may be all you want for the day. I never shoot more than 50 rounds out of my 300 in a day. All that unsolicited opinion aside, I buy my powder locally, either at Southern Sportsman (Montgomery) or at the gun show. I also buy bullets from Zero at the gun show. Midway USA is my primary souce for all my other bullets and tools. I buy casings off of ebay. |
Now that's something I hadn't thought of. I reload for .223 in my Encore for accuracy and my AR's for fun. All the other calibers I reload are for economy. Factory loads for .45-70, .44 Mag, etc. can be very pricey. There will probably come a day when I don't reload bulk .223 anymore unless ammo prices climb significantly, but I'll still load for other weapons. -Hobbit |

as for in town.... fop or simmons in bessemer are pretty much the only places to buy. simmons is high but has a good selection of a bit of everything. the only thing i buy locally is primers. alabama ammo in athens is another good place but it's a bit of a drive. here is where i get most of my stuff. www.iidbs.com/hitech |
I can buy 2000 of Wolf for $210. That's $70 more than the cost of your reloads (although I'm sure your reloads are much higher quality than Wolf.) The fastest press I have is a Lee Turret Press. It would take Cathy Lee Gifford and a crew of Chineese sweat shop children 7 days to crank out 2000 round of bottle neck ammo out of that press. (Realistically, I could probably crank out 100 - 150 bottle neck rounds in an hour.) It takes 10 minutes to order 2000 rounds from Ammoman. YMMV |

lol with my dillon, if i have the cases prepped i can do 2000 rounds over a weekend taking my time. as for natchez... they don't sell in alabama the only problem i have with wolf is it is under powered and dirty as hell. never had any issues other than short stroking with it after a couple hundred rounds. i can load tracers and ss109 for almost the same cost. my guns just seem to prefer the 55gr. |

I'd be interested in a group buy. I reload for all my handguns and rifles except for the off the wall military ones and 7.62x39. I've shot three deer this year with the same 30-30 casing, going to try to see how many I can get with it before I lose it. I need IMR 4895. I use it in all my rifles. There are a couple of places here in Huntsville but they are definitely pricey. rk |
IMR 4895 - (Same as Commercial 4895) Price Per 8 lbs. $78 www.iidbs.com/hitech.zkb i order from these guys 2-3 times a year. best deal i have found on powder and bulletss for 223. |

as i recall primers do not require a hazmat fee. hazmat is 20.00 for up to 8 jugs of powder i beleive. my last order was 1000 large pistol primers 15.00 2000 m193 pulled bullets 52.00 8lbs of win 680. 59.00 shipping 11.31 hazmat fee 20.00 137.31 delivered. i couldn't have bought the powder for that price at the last gun show. let alone the bullets and primers as well. the last group buy we did through them he paid shipping and the hazmat fee. as i recall that was about 400.00 or so worth of powder and bullets. |
|
Heck... count me in on the first group buy of the new year at those prices... especially if he'll cover hazmat again. Those pulled bullet prices are stellar. BTW, TBS- I showed Mrs. Hobbit the picture you posted in another thread of the 1919. She thought that it was pretty cool as well. She's not a gun person, but she does have an appreciation for history. -Hobbit |
alabama ammo is in moulton. he comes to every show here in bham as well. |
Be prepared for a $20 hazmat fee: Dillon Precision Primers Merlin |

Bama Pawn on Highway 67 (at Highway 24, in Decatur) carries reloading stuff. They run about like Alabama Ammo price wise. I've never purchased bulk stuff from them and I don't know if they even carry 8lb. jugs. But you can pickup a lb. of powder and primers and such. When I am ordering bulk lots, I usually just shop the net and find someone who is splitting the Hazmat fee. Last time it was Gameliel Supply. Once I used Tri-State (in Ohio). But mostly I get larger lots from MidSouth Shooters Supply in Mississippi. |
