I have a close friend I'm selling an AR to, he still carries an Indiana drivers license and plans to live in IN...... but due to work he is currently in Illinois for a bit. Since he still holds a IN drivers license and doesn't plan on living in IL, could I sell him the AR private party?

If he is a legal resident of IL, I would transfer with an FFL in Illinois.
They are a little crazy with their gun laws over there and I wouldn't take any chances.
Won't cost much and you will both be protected.
Plus if he plans to keep it with him in Illinois, there won't be any problems in case he has to stay long term.

Yeah It's probably best to transfer to IL, was just hoping to be able to give it to him next time he visits and save on the shipping/transfer fee.

Why not hold on to it until he's back in Indiana?

Then you can do a FTF private sale.

If he is a legal resident of IL then he is required to get at IL drivers license. Who will he be filing his state tax return with? If IN, you are good to go. If IL, then he is a resident there and I wouldn't sell.

If he is on a temporary work assignment he is still a legal resident of Indiana - the question above is the key.

Just give the weapon to your friend the Indiana resident and take the $$$ from your friend the Indiana resident. All is good.......and legal.
