Thune Votes to Protect Second Amendment Rights July 13th, 2006 - Washington, DC - Senator John Thune today voted in favor of an amendment to the Homeland Security Appropriations bill that would prohibit funds appropriated under this measure from being used to confiscate lawfully possessed firearms based on the existence of a declaration or state of emergency. Senator Thune is a cosponsor of the amendment, offered by Senator David Vitter (R-LA). In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina last year-with no way of reaching police or making emergency calls-many residents in the affected regions legally armed themselves to protect their families and homes from the ensuing chaos and civil disorder. The then-New Orleans Police Superintendent, however, ordered his officers to confiscate all firearms, claiming this authority under a state emergency powers law. According to various reports, military and law enforcement officials from several states confiscated guns from New Orleans residents. "For more than 200 years, the Second Amendment has given law-abiding Americans a sense of security in knowing they can defend themselves and their families when their safety is in jeopardy," Thune said. "This freedom couldn't be more essential than in emergency or chaotic situations, such as natural or major disasters, when law enforcement officials are unable to be reached and American families are in harm's way. Today's amendment strengthens the Second Amendment and protects the men and women who legally rely on it to defend themselves when their personal safety is at stake." The Vitter Amendment passed by a vote of 84 to 16 Did a search, does this have anything to do with what you are referring to? |

He is noting but a Democrat in disguise. He needs to officially change parties, as to make sure the voters really see him for what he is, a Democrat.
The GOP needs to come down on him like Thor's hammer and run him out of the party. He is a stain on this state. |

This is the message that I sent to DICK....................
Senator Lugar I am severely disappointed in your vote of Nay on the Thune Amendment(S.amdt 1618/S.1390). Indiana is conservative state, and the first state to have a Lifetime License To Carry A Handgun. Your no vote has made us look like idiots. Actually, it makes you look like an idiot. I have voted in every election since I turned 18. My vote is something I cherish. My vote is something that you will never again get. You no longer stand for what the Republican party was founded upon. Do us all a favor and retire. ........................ I more or less went on after that point that he should take his liberal head and shove it up his ass. HE MUST GO!! |

I just sent him this:
Dear Senator Lugar:
My Indiana driver's license is given full faith and credit across State lines. My Indiana license to carry a handgun should be given similar reciprocity –– after all, my Second Amendment rights are far more fundamental than any "right" to drive. The Thune amendment (S. 1390, amend. 1618) would have taken a significant common-sense step in that direction. Words fail me to express the depth of my disappointment at your "nay" vote on the amendment –– which even our liberal Senator Bayh had the good sense to support. Because of your vote yesterday, you'll never get my vote again. In view of your recent voting record, Indiana may as well have two Senators with a "D" after their names. At least then I might have occasional pleasant surprises, like Sen. Bayh's vote –– rather than feeling betrayed as your record tilts ever further to the left. Voting for your opponent –– no matter who it is –– in 2012 will be a change I can believe in. Respectfully submitted, [WabashMX5] Lafayette, IN The man had potential, but he's worn out his welcome in my book. |

I just don't get it. Indiana ALREADY honors permits from ALL other States issuing permits even if they don't honor ours. He only hurt law abiding traveling Hoosiers. WTF?? That might be his assinine logic: why bother formalizing what Indiana already does. Guess he thinks he's the only Hoosier who actually leaves the state.
