Indianapolis south side. I just took this picture through the window im sitting next to. The pond has been rising quickly over the past few hours. Anybody got a extra f"ing paddle? http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/4104/1001111gg2.jpg |
More than likely where SR39 runs between SR67 and SR37, that would be my best guess. |

My son had a track meet in Columbus this morning at 0900. We made it down on time, passing through Johnson county just as they threw the state of emergency. The weather in Columbus was unsettling. A storm moved NE across the field, then turned around and moved due south back across the field. The air was right at the dewpoint, leading to vertical structures and inflow I normally only see around tornadoes. The meet got postponed till noon. My daughter's soccer match had also been cancelled, there was nothing for her to do except wait, I knew it was still raining hard between Columbus and Indy, and I just didn't like the local weather conditions, so we decided to bail rather than wait another houir or so for a cancelled or late track meet. The drive back was interesting. Between mile markers 78 and 82, fields on both sides of I-65 flooded, along with the median, with water about half a horizontal foot onto the shoulder pavement, still raining hard enough to lower visibility to 100 feet or less. The water in the Flatrock, Blue, and Sugar creek were withing a couple feet of the bridge decks and still rising. Water running down the NB on ramp at Southport exit was crossing I-65 such that many cars hydroplaned and spun out, no warning signs heading northbound. I tried to call WIBC with the news that I-65 ould probably close soon, cutting the state in half, since I-70 and 37 were closed, and that the cell ophone systems in Johnson county were buried and goiving the "all circuits busy" message, but they were buried too and just put me on hold. I'd guess we passed at least 100 farms and houses surrounded by water with water in the houses. Hope those folks got out before the water came up. It wasn't just the low lying areas, it was anywhere ten inches oif rain had a chance to collect, overflow the local basin, then run at speed downhill. Between the radar and the situation in Morgan County, it was obvious to me that Johnson and Shelby Counties weregoing to go the same way, as early as 0800, but the "warnings" for those counties stuck close to realtime, no projection or forecast flood warnings, helping ensure that all those extra people were caught just as unaware as those in counties further west. |

Our power was out from very early Sat. morning into the late afternoon so we headed to Plainfield for breakfast at the Cracker Barrel off of I-70 & SR 267. It was about 9am when we left and really other than the downpour of rain the roads were not flooded yet. By 11am water was over the roads but still passable. I had a cousins sons Graduation open house to attend but wasnt able to cross the roads here in Mooresville. My road was passable, but the Greencastle bridge was closed and the 2 back ways were under water also. SR 144 bridge/ road just west of SR37 was closed.... you know the farm always floods next to the river and is on TV every year. My Mom lives in Franklin and had water up to her Condos driveway by the afternoon and the bridge on SR44 is completely washed out!!! It appeared to be the new bridge going into town from the West..... I live on a hill and the creek was still just at the road in front of my house, so other than some wind damage we were lucky here. Last time the tornadoes hit I had major damage at both houses!!! Martinsville, Paragon and Johnson County is in bad shape. I have about 5 family members that we cant even get to and help yet. We are on our way now to try and reach someones house. Stay dry......... |

I was in Terre Haute this weekend and it was pretty bad there. The majority of the south side of town was hit. It hit some businesses but mostly homes. |

Reporting in from central Jackson county. I live in the White River bottoms and have seen many floods but this one is the biggest anyone has seen around here. The USGS gauge in Seymour hit 20.92 (flood stage is 12') at 10:45 this morning and that equals the record set in 1913. My garage has about 13" of water in it now but the cars and motorcycle are on high ground. About 5" more would be on the deck around my house (all the ground is covered) and about 11" more would put it in my house. The water just crested here and will start falling tonight. Hopefully I'll have some grass out of the water by tomorrow afternoon. Several homes in Seymour and Medora got water in them so I consider myself lucky. I always wondered how big the river had to be to get in my house, now I know |
| I came back to my apartment today around 7 pm. I drove 2.5 hours just to get to mile marker 68 on I65 just to see that it was closed. I hit the rest area between columbus ans edinburg just to find out that all state roads were closed at one point or another. So I hit exit 64 and took county roads up to just west of exit 68 (columbus) to hit highway 46 to go 1 mile to my apatment. I called the boss while at the rest area and he told me work is under water, don't come in tomorrow. I told him if I could not make it to my apartment that I would go home to my parents house and take the week off. He said that it was fine and that he would call me tomorrow with more news. He also told me that most of our semis were in 4-5 feet of water. That sucks when you just put all of that work into those truck just to see them in water. Mean while my roommate has to go to work tomorrow. His 10 minute commute is going to take about an hour now with the roads that he has to take. Meanwhile the southern end of the state is drying up like a popcorm fart in the wind. |
| Columbus was hit hard. We had to evacuate the hospital when the basement and 1st floor flooded. The river broke the record set in 1913 by over a foot. At one point Saturday night, no roads north or west into the city were open and the city was divided in two by Haw Creek which runs down the middle. Today, almost all roads are back open. Fortunately, my house is on top of a hill and we did ok. The hospital will probably be closed for weeks if not months. |

I did a tour of Morgan Co yesterday & this is what I saw. Martinsville flooded from Larry Byrd Ford on SR37 all the way down past the Starbucks. Everything on SR37 had flooded (Krogers, Mcds, BK, Starbucks, Kmart, Rural King, Pizza Hut, etc., plus all the houses) & 37 was closed. Larry Byrd Ford had water 3-4ft deep. SR67 south of Mooresville was flooded & has buckling from flash floods. SR142 by Wilbur Rd had a flash flood all the way down the hill to where it connects w/ SR39 & then the flood went down SR39 almost to SR67. All the houses on 142 & most on 39 had flooded & I saw one that had had a mud slide cover it. There were trees all over the place & several farmer's fields were destroyed w/ soil erosion & trees all over them. I saw a couple of bridges that had damage to them. The Conservation Club is probably still under water, the road to it is still closed. Paragon flooded & part of the train tracks had washed out as well as some of the bridge. These were the major areas that I noticed. There were lots of other areas w/ flooding as well. Hendricks Co sent their river rescue unit down to help there was so much flooding & all the other fire/police depts were out making saves. I have to give the public safety guys credit. Several of the Martinsville PD, Sheriff deputies firemen live by SR37 & their houses flooded but they still went out & helped save others. I've lived in Morgan Co my entire life (30yrs) & have never seen flooding this bad. My dad says SR37 has never closed from flooding in the entire time we've lived here. |

A guy at work I have known for years drowned in the flood near Columbus. His name was Steve Gates. I used to see this guy just about every morning at work and we would shoot the breeze or give each other crap about one thing or the other. He was a cool dude and enjoyed poking fun at whatever or who ever, overall a real good guy. We'll miss you Steve!!!!! Rest in Peace brother. |
Damn, Justin....sorry to hear that. My thoughts/prayers go out to Steve's family. |
