I knew this would be his response. Dear Mr. TRS: I am writing in response to your communication regarding the recent school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. As a father and grandfather with many educators in my family, this tragedy touched me deeply. We are all keeping the Newtown families in our thoughts and prayers. But I believe we owe these families more – we owe them thoughtful and effective gun reforms so that other families may be spared the same pain. The facts from incidents in Newtown, Aurora, Fort Hood, Tucson and Blacksburg are clear: the more powerful the gun and more ammunition it has, the more people it can kill. The Newtown shooter, the Columbine killers and the gunman in Aurora all used assault weapons designed for our troops on the front lines of war. The gunmen in Tucson, Fort Hood, Virginia Tech and Newtown were all armed with high-capacity magazines. In fact, the Newtown shooter was armed with enough ammunition to kill every student in the school. With less powerful guns and less bullets, perhaps more lives would have been saved. I have always relied on the counsel of Maryland's law enforcement leaders when it comes to my positions on various gun control policies. I believe strongly in the right to bear arms, but this right comes with reasonable limits. For example, I do not believe that private citizens should be able to purchase assault weapons designed for warfare that can out-shoot our police officers. It's for that reason I cosponsored legislation to continue the ban on assault weapons in 2004. I have also supported efforts to ban large-capacity ammunition magazines, such as those used during the Newtown tragedy. I will continue to support these reasonable limits as Congress renews its examination of our country's gun laws in the days ahead. There are other common sense steps we can take, such as creating smart technology that renders a weapon useless if loss or stolen. We can improve background checks on gun owners and more carefully monitor third-party gun sales. And, I believe, our country's efforts to identify and treat the mentally ill must be part of the discussion. Has anyone in any state recieved a response stating that a senator or congressman is completely OPPOSED to a ban on magazines over 10 rounds? Seems like even the congresspeople who once supported us are, at best, keeping quiet. I have a bad feeling about this. |

Today I was appointed to the prestigious House Judiciary Committee. I am extremely happy about this move because it will give me the opportunity to stand up for our 2nd Amendment rights. I firmly believe, in accord with the founders, that our right to own firearms stands next in importance to the constitution itself. Firearms represent our liberty and are the keystone to our independence. I believe that an atmosphere of armed citizenry restrains evil — and deserves a place of honor and respect in our society. I absolutely uphold the right of individuals to keep and bear arms, a right which antedated the Constitution, and was solemnly confirmed by the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution. I have always supported and defended the law-abiding citizen’s God-given right to gun ownership because self-defense is the key to maintaining life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. As your Delegate, I will continue to call for the protection of such fundamental individual rights as recognized in the Supreme Court's decisions: District of Columbia v. Heller and McDonald v. Chicago, which both codified our right and responsibility to safely use and store firearms. As long as I am able, I will support our fundamental right to self-defense wherever a law-abiding citizen has a legal right to be, and I support all legislation that expands the exercise of that right, by allowing those with state-issued carry permits to carry firearms for their protection. I recently contacted you and was not pleased with the response I received for many reasons. There were many factual errors and I would like to address a few of them.
You mentioned the tragic shootings in Newtown, Aurora, Fort Hood and Blacksburg. You were so quick to blame the weapons used instead of the killers themselves. You only mentioned the mental state of the killers as a closing remark with little explanation. The guns are not the problem. A person determined to kill will do it with any available weapon, be it a knife, car or bomb. Next, you claimed that the Columbine killers used "assault weapons designed for our troops on the front lines of war." They did not. In fact, they used two shotguns, a semi-automatic handgun and a semi-automatic rifle. It is clear that you do not know what you are referring to when you speak about firearms. You swore to defend the Constitution, but you appear to be selectively defending the parts you agree with. Let me remind you of a key part of the Second Amendment: "shall not be infringed." I am a registered Maryland voter. I am paying attention to your actions. If you support any new gun control legislation I will give my vote and financial support to your opponent in the next election. |
