As much as I tried, I can't really swing a VA address when I move to that area. Looks like I'll be living in MD soon. I don't have any SBR's or suppressors. Just basic handguns and a few long guns.
Is there a requirement to register said handguns once I establish residence? I will likely leave half of them in a buddy's safe out of MD. I shoot USPSA/IDPA so I've already read up on transportation restrictions (sucky). Since I'm bringing rifles with me, any restrictions there? One 20" AR, one 16" FAL. Meant to post this in one of the stickies regarding MD laws. I had already read through all the pages. |

The topic of "MD" and "gun laws" can be a volatile mix here on arfcom.
So, here's the good news: -NO registration requirements for you! Mandatory registration only applies to (I think) machineguns. -USPSA and IDPA are excellent in this area. Within a 2 hour drive, you should be able to access a match almost every weekend during the season (we don't shoot as much over the winter). -top level competition: since you already shoot, this is a BIG plus! Its kinda like getting to play 18 holes with Tiger Woods in that you might be on the same squad with former world/national champs. NOTE: there are a few guns you just can't own; I think some guns like those on the "assault pistol" list are not eligible. However, if you really must have one, they could probably be registered as SBRs or AOWs or brought in through some other loop-hole. In short, you can own almost anything you want if you look into the law deep enough. Also, the state has put out a memo clarifying you CAN transport a magazine that is loaded in you car (as long as its apart from your cased gun. Not surprisingly, it appears not everyone got the memo. Make your own choice here; I choose to transport mags unloaded as its not a big inconvenience & I don't feel like being a test case in court. YMMV. |

There has never been a restriction on carrying loaded magazines. The confusion stems from the MD DNR rule limiting the number of rounds that may be loaded while hunting (eight for rifle magazines). |

Yes - I agree it was a DNR regulation that was the source of this (though not the one you quote). However, I believe that for decades, the confusion was compounded by one or more of the geniuses who were (or are) teaching at the Maryland police academy. Heard the movie's not too far off, though I haven't been personally. In any event OP: come on over; you will be just fine (MD sure ain't New Jersey!). |

Thanks a ton for the responses! Actually makes me feel a bit better. Now if they would pass "shall issue" property value will sky rocket in MD. Ok, maybe not but it sure will make life easier.
Glad to hear it's a "voluntary" registration. Nice to hear that the USPSA scene is good too. The area I'm looking at is 1.5 hours from Fredericksburg (Area 8 right?) and also 1.5 hours from the Eastern shore MD club (or something like that, it's across the bay). S |

My club near Dulles folded some time back, but the shoots you should not miss are: Fredericksburg VA (site of 1997 U.S. Nationals) Thurmont, MD York PA and Summit Point W.VA (also have 3gun) (anyone feel free to add their match) D.C. itself has never had a USPSA or ipsc club at all. In fact, they do not have any ranges (not public ones anyway ).
All should be an easy drive from most of the state. The eastern shore also puts on a nice match, though it is further. |
