So I figured I'd get some percision rifle training for my upcoming birthday. I see courses from all over, but not many close.
2-3 day course - long distance shooting. Any suggestions? |

You can see if The FIRE Institute is running one this year. (it will be out in Pittsburgh).
Another option is to wait till spring. The AGC (Associated Gun Clubs of Baltimore) usually runs a CMP shooting course (over the course of several saturdays) which includes long range marksmanship in Marriotsville. If Ed's still on here, he had hookups for long range shooting courses down at Quantico. Two day course and on the final day they shoot out to 1000y. He said it was great, unfortunetly my rifle/ammo/optic isn't up for 1000y. I know of one other place (in PA) that offers such a class. I've got an e-mail into the instructor to see if he plans on offering the class to the public. |

Thanks for the tip. |

Maryland Shooter, I've replied to your commo. Thank you Forest. Actually, I have quit my day job and am working full time as a long range shooting instructor with Vern Harrison of Central Virginia Tactical. More info on this change is here: http://www.mdshooters.com/showthread.php?t=39573 The online course DEERSNIPER mentions is given by Frank, owner of SnipersHide. Frank works at RiflesOnly in Texas and this is a very good school. The online course is necessarily limited, but there IS a lot to be learned and it's well worth the price of admission. Trumpet's suggestion of Storm Mountain is also good. They are an established school in a nice location and receive many positive reviews. One thing about RO (on site) & SM is that they normally provide training in small groups and run scheduled classes, which have their own pros/cons. mace 2364's suggestion to contact Vern Harrison at CVT is still viable. Vern is tapering off due to age and health and is referring many of his new precision rifle/long range students to me. I am working both with Vern in VA and at my own venues in central Maryland (to 600 yards) and western MD (to 1,150 yards). Training that Vern and I provide is normally on an individual, pair or small team basis, and is tailored to/scheduled with the student(s), versus having a fixed schedule of classes with fixed curriculum and larger groups. We have conducted group class for overviews and/or specific situations, such as the new shooter train-ups at the Allegheny Sniper Challenge matches, but the advanced stuff needs to be more personalized for maximum benefit. For working on the fundamentals in small groups, I have contacted Delmarva Sporting Clays (Vienna, MD) and have permission to set up some introductory classes at their range, where we can address basics, rifle fit and setup while shooting to 300 yards. I am currently checking into using a 600 yard venue in central MD, where we might conduct a similar class on this side of the bridge. More info will be available as I have the opportunity to do more planning, but this seems an economical way to provide a jump start into getting set up for long range precision. Thank you, Ed |

What ammo would you suggest for 600 yards? My rifle shoots the 110gr VMAX well to that range. Other rounds I would consider would be the 110gr OTM (sold by Hornady or use their bullet to load your own), the 115gr SMK (SSA or your own), or the 110gr Accubond (same BC as the VMAX, but higher MVs may be possible...). The GS Custom bullets should also do well, but I have not seen any results from anyone yet. |
| While I have not taken a course from Ed, I have known him for some time and he's a good guy. He's done some work on one of my rifles, we have done some equipment deals and I had an opportunity to see a couple of his long range rigs. Very knowlegeable but not full of himself. If I had the time/money to take a long range course, I would just call Ed. |
