I know an individual who got into some trouble when he was younger.  The cases were closed 21 years ago to be exact.  He has not been in trouble since then, he just made some really stupid mistakes when he was in his early 20's.  Anyway, he wants to get his record expunged primarily for the purpose of being able to legally own a firearm.  He is a hunter and due to some recent developments, he feels his family would be safer with a firearm in the house for self defense.

I have heard that after 20 years this is possible, but does anyone have any experience with this process?  I am trying to help him through the process, but want to make sure that this can be done in MD.  He has 2 felonies on his record from that time.

I would think that consulting with a local lawyer that works in this area is the first step towards determining his chances for expungement.

I think you need a pardon from the governor for felonies. Good luck with that!

Yea, apparently in MD the only way to expunge ANY conviction (misdemeanor, violent and non violent felonies the whole nine yards) is to get a pardon from the governor.  There is a process in place, and apparently it is not unheard of for pardons to be issued in situations like his.  20+ years and you have a shot at getting a pardon.  Career criminals in this state get away with all kinds of stuff, so I don't see why the governor won't let a person who made one mistake have another chance.  We'll just have to see how it goes.

Probably helps to write a big fat check to O'Malley or the MD Democrat party.
