Hi,

Does anyone have experience applying as a physician/pharmacist/etc. for a CCW in Maryland?  I know how it is virtually impossible to get a CCW for most people in this state, but the licensing guidelines do specifically mention physicians and pharmacists as eligible recipients.  Is this true in anyone's experience, or is it typically still a waste of money to apply?

Thanks.

I know of a physician who did it and said it was very easy because he carried large sums of $ and had access to CDS.

Same question but for lawyers.  Do you really need to show you have had threats against your life?

What about for people who are Paramedics/FF/EMTs to be able oto carry while off duty? I work in Baltimore City as a Fire Fighter Paramedic, and have to deal with a lot of unsavory folks on a daily basis.

Hi,

I don't have any first hand experience to share-- hence my original post.  Nonetheless, it is my impression that even though the regs specifically list doctors, pharmacies, etc., there is still a significant burden of proof on you that your life is in danger, you carry large sums of money, you carry narcotics, etc.  Simply being a lawyer and worried about the potential of a disgruntled client may not be enough.  Again, just my take on it.  If you can document such occurrences, you'll have more ground upon which to stand.

Thanks.

My understanding is that most "civilian" CCW holders in MD fall into three categories:

1.  politicians and their friends
2.  judges and their friends
3.  lawyers

In 2002 (the only year I have stats for), 14 veterinarian 17 psychologists, 80 pharmacists, 332 doctors and 107 dentists had CCW permits. Compared to 1 Senator, 5 legislaters, 7191 retired police and 2024 correctional officers with permits,

92 Firemen had permits.

I have hear that it can be difficult for doctors unless they have direct proof that their life has been threatened.  Even then it is a long, drawn out process with a lot of paperwork.  This is what I have been told be a couple medical doctors who have tried getting a CCW in MD.

Basically if you aren't a cop then the odds are very slim.  This does tick me off quite a bit I do have to say.
