Anyone know off hand if they are regulated?

As long as it's semiauto and has an 18in barrel, I don't see how it would be.

Although, I have been known to be wrong from time to time.

The ATF reclassified it as a DD, post facto.

More wonderful rule changes

Not that I doubt the ATF would do this, but when did this happen?

Wrong! That is the Street Sweeper the was made a DD.

Spas 12 is a Reg. weapon in Md because of the pistol grip.... Same as an AR. Fill out the paper work pay $10 for the state to "not disapprove" you.  I traded my Spas last year. To heavy, big and parts are a bitch. Now, in it's day she was the shit. Then much better shotguns came out. Shop near OC had one for $600USD last week. I can see if it's still for sale Thursday if anybody needs one.

It can't be regulated because of the pistol grip as the Benelli and Beretta's with pistol grips aren't regulated. The AR isn't regulated because of the pistol grip either as there are plenty of pistol gripped rifles that are non regulated such as the HBAR, MAS, and the lowly hipoint carbine. If the SPAS-12 is regulated simply because of the grip there'd be plently more on that list, please don't give them any ideas...

I need to clarify that I know it's regulated. I was just stating that it can't be regulated simply due to the pistol grip because of all the other non-regulated guns that have one. Sorry for the confusion.

But that is why the SPAS 12 was put on the list. MD doesn't care what model SPAS 12 you buy, fixed or folding stock.
It's a regulated weapon in MD.

Regulated by Maryland, not by ATF.

I was saying that while it is regulated it is not because of the pistol grip as the LAW12 can be had without and the Benelli's and Beretta can come with a pistol grip and they're not regulated.

Edit for spelling.

I'd say it's because of the folding stock. Look at the list of regulated weapons and note the Mini-14 'folding stock only' is on it.

Taken from Wikipedia

In 1983, the gun was introduced to the United States, where it was marketed as a sporting shotgun to help bypass laws that would normally label it as illegal for private ownership. As a result, the SPAS acronym officially stands for "Sporting Purpose Automatic Shotgun". However, military-oriented features like a heavy heat shield for sustained fire increase the weight of the weapon to the point where it can become unwieldy for hunting or competition shooting. For this reason, there exist popular reinterpretations of the acronym, such as "Special Purpose Automatic Shotgun" or "Special Purpose Assault Shotgun".

In recent years, U.S. firearm laws have completely blocked the importation of the SPAS-12 shotgun (for private consumption), as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) declared that it was "not suitable for sporting purposes". However, the SPAS-12 was not reclassified as a Title II firearm; therefore, re-sales and transfers within the country are relatively unobstructed by federal legislation. Additionally, in 2000 Franchi ceased production of the SPAS-12 altogether, and has since shifted its marketing focus towards the new SPAS-15. Together, these events have made the SPAS-12 a collector's item both in the United States and elsewhere.

Folding stock Mini-14 has the pistol grip, fixed stock does not. MD doesn't care what stock is on the SPAS-12,it has a pistol grip, it is regulated. MD posted a list years ago what features made a non-handgun regulated. Somebody with more computer fu can find it. Parts listed included, pistol grip, muzzle attachments, heat shield, bayo lug..........
But as you know, Maryland's laws make no sense.
