Hi Guys!

I noticed a job opening today in Minnesota that I was considering applying to. I was just curious what the gun laws atmosphere was like in Minnesota?

Are there any assault rifle or handgun ownership restrictions?

Does Minnesota allow a CCW license?

Is the political climate in Minnesota dangerous (liberal/communist leaning) for the future of gun ownership?

Thanks!

On the whole, slightly worse than the national average.  No suppressors, SBS, or non-C&R machine guns.  Silly purchase permit for pistols and "assault weapons" that can be obtained for free from your local PD, good for a year, not needed if you have a CCW permit.  Legal duty to retreat.

Aside from that, it's pretty good.  Aside from the duty to retreat part the carry laws are actually pretty good.  "No guns" signs have no real force of law outside of the usual short list of prohibited places (K-12 schools, federal buildings, jails and such).  Open carry is legal with a CCW permit .  No restrictions on owning non-NFA guns (the purchase permit is just that, it's not needed to bring your existing collection into MN).

Minnesota is shall-issue, the process isn't that bad.  A 4- or 5-hour class and a live-fire test and you're good.  Good for five years.

I'm cautiously optimistic about the political situation.  Minnesota has always been a deep blue state (the communist party had a significant presence for decades in the Iron Range in the early 1900s) but aside from the occasional spasm of idiocy it's been pretty good on guns.  We did manage to stop a truly awful AWB/background check bill in early 2013, and it looks like the movement to legalize suppressors is picking up steam (although it probably won't get past that halfwit Dayton).  The rest of the political/social climate is the usual toxic blue-state mix of high taxes and absurd regulation.  I was born in St. Paul, and lived there for 25 years until I moved to Texas a couple of years ago.  The political situation was a large part of that, along with the winter weather.  I sustained an injury to my arm that resulted in nerve damage, causing shooting streaks of cold and pain in my arm when it got cold.  I couldn't abide the thought of dealing with that for half the year for the rest of my life, so I left.  I still have a great deal of friends and family up there, I still keep tabs on things up there.

Lovecraftfan pretty much nailed it. Lots of liberals here but many just care about getting subsidies, not banning guns. Honestly, trying to make sense out out of the political landscape of this state can make your head spin.

Minnesota gets a lot colder than Kentucky, and it can get just about as hot. Dress accordingly and you'll be fine.

Knew someone who was trying to write software that could analyze political trends in an attempt to predict the outcome of elections several cycles out.  He ended up having to leave Minnesota out of his calculations because it was screwing up his averages.  There have been so many things that have happened here that could not have happened anywhere else.  Jesse Ventura is the best-known and arguably the worst of these but there are many more.

In all honesty, I'll respectfully disagree with that.  If a suppressor legalization bill makes to to Dayton's desk, I'll bet dollars to pesos that he signs it.  Dayton's been VERY cautious about promoting anti-gun legislation, let alone saying he'd sign it.

I'm hoping you're right but not real optimistic. He did, after all, refuse to sign a castle doctrine law that was passed by both parties here.

Thanks guys! I really appreciate the detailed information.

Deep blue states really worry me though.

On any pro-gun bill, he'll defer to the law enforcement "consensus," and the DNR says supressors will result in every last deer being poached.

Minnesota is a lot like Colorado.  There are both conservative, pioneering, independant types as well as big government welfare sucking hippies.  That, and some great natural resources.
