Dear Pharcta2,
Thank you for contacting me regarding the issue of gun control in our state. I appreciate your input and the opportunity to respond. The recent tragedies in Newtown Connecticut, Aurora Colorado and even in Minneapolis (the Accent Signage massacre by a disgruntled former employee), have resulted in a myriad of proposals from policymakers, both nationally as well as at the state level. We must take a thoughtful approach to this subject and work on solutions that get to the root cause - mental illness - with a goal of preventing future tragedies. We also must ensure that whatever measures we enact do not infringe upon our Second Amendment Constitutional Rights. I believe in this! In 2008, the Supreme Court affirmed the right of the individual to bear arms as a fundamental concept of liberty. Not only does this liberty protect our nation, community, and families today, but it will serve to preserve the rights and safety of future generations. Thank you again for taking the time to share your thoughts with me. If I may ever be of assistance to on a matter of state government, please do not hesitate to contact me. Sincerely, Mark |

I thought I would provide you with an update on the bills that are going to be heard in the State Senate Judiciary committee this Thursday and Friday. As always, please feel free to contact me about this or any other legislative issue. Sincerely, Mary Kiffmeyer State Senator- District 30 Kiffmeyer Gun-Bill Update, Feb 20.pdf My response... Thank you Senator. I would have you remind your colleagues that Article 6 paragraph 2 of the US constitution explicitly states, "...laws of any State to the contrary not withstanding". The Second Amendment equally clearly states, "the Right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed". "Reasonable restrictions" are just a rebranded way to say "infringement". Most of our crime problems do not stem from the proliferation of firearms, but from the criminal class having greater access to such tools than We the Law Abiding. Please continue to fight for us in the Legislature. Thank you again, RDC Otsego, MN And to my utter amazement, she responded back again... Agreed. Will do Sen Mary Kiffmeyer Senate District 30 And yes... ARFCOM's board formatting is giving me t3h AIDS today. Running Mozilla's Aurora beta and it's snarggling every time I get fancy with the formatting... FML. |
