Maybe I'm just being a whiny biatch, but government is such a scam. I renewed my wife's vehicle tabs today for her 2005 Mitsubishi Outlander. We bought it new the first quarter of '06 and it was literally the last '05 on the lot at the dealership. We paid $16.5k for it. Normally when I pay for vehicle tabs I don't read the particulars about the costs, but for some reason today I did and something caught my eye. They had my wife's vehicle price listed as $24,000!!! WTF!! So I called the DMV to see if the price we paid for tab renewal was based on the prices they had listed for the vehicle. Sure enough it was. So I inquired about how they came up with that price. The DMV person's response was that how much you pay for your vehicle is irrelevant, they simply use the MSRP and then add 5% (or some percent, can't recall exactly how much she said, but it was less than 10%). IMO this is bullshit since no one ever pays MSRP when they buy a vehicle and them adding some additional mark-up percent to it is just adding insult to injury.
Seems to me anytime the government charges you a fee based on an item's price, and then overestimates said item's price, they will since it translates to more revenue for them. Kinda like how even though home prices have plummeted over the past 5 years many government home value estimates for property tax purposes have not necessarily been reduced because it would mean less revenue for the government. And good luck trying to petition the government for a reevaluation of your home's value in order to get your property tax bill lowered. |
| When I lived down south you could get cheaper plates by going to certain counties. They would go out and look at your ride and set the price by the value. Some counties under valued your ride. OK one more beer and I'll get some sleep. Glad its the last day of night shift. |

Yep, and here's another one you'll like:
Remember when Ventura passed the reduced tab tax during his administration? You know, where after two years your tabs go down to about $99? You pay through the arse the first two years, but after that not so bad, right? Well, the state has a scam going there, too. When I bought the bridal unit a new car in 2009, the original tabs were only good for 11 months. Guess what? When you renew in 11 months, the next ones are good for 12 months. That means that after 23 months you're buying tabs AGAIN. And, since it hasn't hit the two year mark yet, you don't get by with the $99 tabs. Noooo...you get it in the ass again at the higher rate. The politicians should feel really good about helping the economy. Because of that stupid accounting process, I won't EVER buy a new car. Every car I buy will be at least three years old. I'm not giving those bastards one more dime than I have to. FBHO. And FMD. |

I think we're all tired of getting screwed by the gov.
Here's my suggestion. Drive a 10 year old vehicle ( I don't really care what the heighbors think). Pay $43 per year for tabs. Spend the money you save on new weapons, ammo and a Gadsden flag to fly in your front yard and say F-em all.
Sorry for the rant, I feel better now |
| Out of curiosity I checked the MN DMV site for my '05 Ford F250 diesel superduty 4x4 to see how much they have listed for its base price. This is a 6 yr old truck that is in mint condition and only has 85k miles on it yet I would be lucky to get around $10k for it. MN DMC is basing my truck's tabs on a base price of $30k!!! I guess at least I can feel somewhat better in that my truck only costs me $111 for tabs here in Minnesota whereas in California where we moved from tabs cost me over $500. |
