Where i live (a few miles west of Hutchinson) people have been saying there are cougars (1) that have been roaming around. i have not seen any tracks, but a farmer has claimed to have seen one. i was just wondering if anyone else have heard such a thing. on a side note, i have had a outside cat for a couple years, have always seem him at least once a day, and for the last month i have not seem him or tracks. i do not believe a cougar got him. but at the time i heard about the cougar, my cat went missing. Also what are the rules of killing it if it is on my land? i really don't want my dog to end up as a meal.
thanks. |

Great reason to carry your CCW with you at all times!
I would treat a cougar the same way as dealing with any other undesirables: Motive (does the cougar appear to want you for a snack?) Means (sharp claws and teeth) Opportunity (is the cougar making a move toward you or indicated hostility) Proximity (greater than 21 ft rule applies, I believe, here) |

What if she is totally hot ? THAT didn't take long!!!
ETA: Referring the the four legged, feline variety... I'm going to give the DNR a call and see what (if any) the official stance is. I hunt coyotes at night and wouldn't really want to end up a midnight snack for some wayward kitty. |

Just got off the phone with the DNR... Their "OFFICIAL STANCE" on shooting a cougar on your land or in protection of life...
"Nope, you can't shoot'em. They are protected. You gotta scare them off." Ummmm.... OK..... Sounded like a departmentally issued response to me. YMMV... |

Quoted: Self-defense ? What if its coming right for you? The laws is a little dated but this is what exsists: https://www.revisor.mn.gov/laws/?doctype=Chapter&year=1986&type=0&id=386 Anything that is not on that list is protected As far as Self Defense against a mountian lion...............The State of Minnesota says scare it off or call them, they will protect you The only agency authorized to shoot one is the DNR |
| As many recent sightings as there have been, and considering they have been here forever, I'm a little surprised a trapper hasn't caught one by accident yet. Then again the DNR has only recently acknowledged their presence. My uncle cared for a horse that was officially attacked by a bear, but the conservation officer unofficially said it was more than likely a cougar. Cougars have no problem making a snack out of pets, livestock, or people. If you think one is in the area, I would watch your animals and family. |

Let us know what the DNR says. |
