| I'm up in Duluth for the weekend staying with the girlfriend, but she's got classes here and there through today and tomorrow. Any suggestions on good stuff to see or do that isn't terribly expensive? |

www.visitduluth.com has a ton of information for tourists.
The Army Corps of Engineers has a pretty cool museum in Canal Park (right next to the Lift Bridge) that has all sorts of Lake Superior history and pictures / models of ships & freighters. Admission is free. The Depot has some pretty sweet old trains and displays relating to the railroad - admission is pretty cheap and it is interesting. If you are looking for something to do at night, Zinema 2 is located right downtown and usually has some pretty good movies (a lot of indie/progressive stuff too) and they serve beer as well A lot of the Duluth/Northshore attractions that are free are outdoors, and it is a bit cold for that, but you can easily spend a whole afternoon down in Canal Park, getting some coffee and wandering around in all the shops there. If you go down there, be careful about parking in the lot next to the Carribou coffee. If you go to any business other than the coffee shop or the gas station, they will tow you in about 2 minutes (seriously). Another fun tour is the William Irwin, used to be the flag ship of the US Steel tacconite freighter line. It is also down in the canal park area, but I am not sure if they are open all year or just in the summer. What sort of stuff are you interested in / like to see? I could probably come up with a few more ideas if you give some general direction. |
| I'm big into history, and Great Lakes history has always been an interest of mine. My family's always had a lot of connections to the Lake and the North Shore, but I haven't been up here since I was probably about 13, so I'm sort of rediscovering it all on my own. I seem to remember visiting the Maritime Museum about 15 years ago, but don't remember much of it. |

Omni threater is really cool if you havent done that before.
Enger tower is a good place to go for a view. My wife and I will get a coffee and go up there to sit on the rocks and watch the ships. Vista Fleet boat tours are a good time. There's a lot to see and do in Canal Park. Go down there and wander around. Gooseberry falls is beautiful if you don't mind driving north awhile longer. Pickwick is an awesome restaurant - cool atmosphere and food that almost makes the drive from the cities worthwhile. Not cheap, but really good. |

Go to the Anchor Bar (good cheap food, and all sorts of cool weird shipping stuff hanging all over the place) in Superior. The Depot is pretty cool, although I haven't been there in a while.
Check out the Richard Bong/WW2 museum in Superior, they have a fully restored P-38 there as well as some other cool WW2 things. It's on hwy 2/53 only a couple miles from Duluth. |
