What is a mini 3 gun? Where does it occur? What do I need to bring? How much does it cost?
4/9/2008 5:20:32 PM EDT
[#2]
A mini-3 gun is a three gun competition involving a rifle pistol and shotgun geared towards a new shooter. Its a timed event, so speed is of the essence. It takes place at del-tone/luth gunclub, usually starting at 10, but show up a little early. Bring 100 rounds per weapon although you probably won't use all your rounds. Entry fee is 30 dollars i think... ?

You sure about that June 20th date?  That's a Friday (not that I'm complaining...)

My offer still stands.

I have a Glock 34 (9mm) w/mags, pouches, and holster a new shooter can borrow if they don't have a handgun.

I also have a Remington 1100 12ga set up for 3-gun a shooter can borrow if they don't have a shotgun.  I did have a Benelli M1 but my son has taken it over for now.

All you would need are an AR15 (DPMS sells them wink, wink) and ammo for the three guns.

I think we had about eight new shooters at the last mini 3-gun.  I think they all had fun.

Do we have to shoot an AR type rifle?

I got to be honest If I can't bring my M1A and shoot in a learning situation (mini three gun) Im really not intrested.

I have an AR type rifle as well I just want to be able to shoot both.

Your M1A would be great.  You could shoot it in the He-Man (also known as Heavy Metal) Division.  Rifle - .308.  The handgun is usually a .45acp w/8 or 10 rounds (don't remember now) and a pump 12ga.  One of the fastest growing divisions in the sport.  The rifle must be iron sight.  Some of the major shoots have the same division except you can put an optic on your .308 rifle.

I shot this division the first year I shot 3-gun only because it was by far the cheapest to get into.  I have a Benelli Nova pump with extended tube if you need to borrow it for the shoot.  I also have a drop down thigh rig for the rifle magazines if you need it.

You could also shoot this rifle in the normal Limited (iron sighted) Division and use the rest of the normal limited equipment.  You would be at a slight disadvantage on the rifle stages because of the magazine capacity and the recoil.

I filled out an app for tri gun too. I am going to have to do some work between now and then, and try to get to some of these mini shoots.

I will make at least two of the minis and hopefully I get a slot at the big one in August.  Unfortunately I can't make the Apr 20th date due to a conflict, but I should be able to make the next one...

Is the match still on?   Never been to one but would love to try it.  I have AR, 870HD, and 1911.  will that work ?

Shoot is still on.

Sign in starts at 0900 hrs. with rounds down range hopefully at 1000 hrs.  Feel free to come early to help set up.  I will be there at around 0800 hrs.

The weapons you have will work fine.  Your 1911 and 870 are perfect for Heavy Metal (He-Man) Division but you would also need a .308 rifle for that division.  What you have will work fine for Limited (iron sights on rifle) or Tactical (one optic on rifle) divisions.  You will just lack capacity in your handgun compared to guys like me that have 17 or 19 rounds in the handgun.  Just bring several mags for your 1911.  The courses of fire we run into here are really not that much slower to run with a pump vs. a semi-auto shotgun so your shotgun will work fine.

What distance is the rifle stage shot at?  If it is not too long i could bring PC9 (open sites ) and then also bring my P89 (more capacity) although i shoot the 1911 better.  I do have 5 mags for the 1911 so will that work ?   My AR15 is scoped will that be ok ? Am i safe to assume for the shotgun we are talking slugs only ? Sorry about all the Questions.  Just a newbie and want to do it right is all.  Thanks, kschwa

Rifle can go out to 200 yards at DPMS.  Most shots are 25-100 yards.
5 mags for the 1911 will give you 41 rounds (assuming 8 rounders).  Should be OK.  I think last time we shot about 20 rounds on both stages.
Scoped AR is good to go.  This will put you in Tactical Optics division.
Shotgun was 10 slugs, the rest birdshot at the last match.

Not a problem with the questions.

There are four different divisions in this 3-gun.

Limited-  Rifle is usually .223 and must have iron sights.  Shotgun is 12 or 20 ga., pump or semi.  most ammo. is 7 1/2 birdshot but bring 20 slugs just in case.  Handgun is anything 9mm or larger.  The high capacity is nice but not necessary, you would just reload more.

Tacitcal Optics - Same as above except you may have one scope on the rifle.  You will see anything from Aimpoints to ACOGs.  At this shoot your shots will be no longer than 200 yrds. but you may sometimes see some tight shots.  Lots of your shots will be at fairly close distance with lots of targets that you want to engage as quickly as possible.  Think low power variable (1-4 power).  A 3-9 scope is not necessarily an advantage.

Heavy Metal - .308 rifle with iron sights (think AR-10, DPMS LR308, or M-14 type).  Handgun is .45 1911 style (or at least held to 8 or 10 round capacity).  Shotgun must be a pump 12ga.

Open - Really cool stuff.  Almost anything goes.  This is the only division that allows the use of a bipod on rifle.  You will also see red dot sights on shotgun and handgun.

So any of your weapons will do.  Have a good holster (even the Uncle Mike kydex kind work very well) and a way to carry extra ammo. for you handgun and rifle.  Pants pockets work fine until you find something better.  You will also need a way to carry shotgun shells.  Again, lots of people use pockets starting out but it is much slower.  You will see most shooters with shell caddies clipped to the belt that hold four or six shotgun shells.  These can be purchased from Brownell's or Dillons.  I can borrow you some at the shoot.

Grab any of the guns you have, 100 rounds of ammo for all three weapons, some spare slugs you find lying around, and you should be good to go.  The new shooters are welcomed and get lots of help from the people who have shot this before.

I hope to attend one of the sunday shoots in May or July.

A friend of mine got a Benelli super black eagle with a plus 3 which should work well.

Any ideas for carrying ammo on the cheap? I was planning on using on of those 25 round shotgun shell belts and mabey a alice belt with some cheap mag pouches.

What is a common pistol holster? Serpa or leather?

kschwa,

Nice to see you at the shoot.  Shot very well.  I hope you learned a little something about the sport.

Beater9C1

Cheapest shotshell carrier is big pockets.  You will just be a little slower.  I would suggest shell caddies by California Competition Works or Progressive Machine and Tool.  But not until you shoot a match or to so you know if you like the sport or not.

Serpa or Blade-Tech type holsters are mainly what you will see at these matches.  As long as it is secure and covers the trigger you will be set.

Hey Payne,

If these guys are looking to shoot the Tri-Gun.....you might want to suggest they go for that class that is gonna happen up up at Del-Tone for 3 gun competition. It might help.....definately can't hurt!!

That link on Del Tone's website is for 2007.  I tried to register for the classes at the clubhouse last year. First nobody at the clubhouse knew what I was talking about even though I had a flyer for the clinics I got from DPMS at a gunshow.  Then I heard they were cancelled, then back on, then cancelled again. finally I heard they had a couple clinics.........but only one or two guys showed up. Wonder why...

I would definitley be in for a couple three gun clinics if they have them this year.

I attended the 3-gun classes last year.  They were not very well attended only because there was a mix up in the communitcations I think.

For anyone wanting to get a jump start on their 3-gun skills, these classes are a must.  The classes are for shotgun and rifle only, but they are worth the time and effort.  Tim Ubl is the instructor and does a great job of getting the training across in an easy to learn manner.  For newer 3-gun shooters, you will pick up more skills in these four nights than you would learn on your own in years of competitions.

Jon Olson at Del-Tone-Luth is the new manager and I am sure he will keep updated on these classes.

This might seem silly, but would a Garand be accepted in He-man?
What choke and ammo do you use in the scatter guns? 00-buck, bird, slug?
sounds like a ridiculously good time!

No need to pre-register.

The Garand would be slower but rate very high on the "cool' factor.  Shotgun is normally 7 1/2 shot (the cheap stuff), but bring slugs just in case.  You normally would not need more than 10 - 20 slugs.  Very seldom see buckshot.  My 1100 shotgun has Cylinder Bore only and it seems to work just fine.  Otherwise IC to Light Modified is seen a lot also.

Looks like you are all set for the He-Man/Heavy Metal class.  Iron sighted .308 or larger battle rifle, pump 12 ga. shotgun, 1911 handgun.
