Is there a general rule of thumb for what it should cost to have drywall hung?  Something like X dollars per square foot?  I'm looking to replace a drop ceiling and just trying to get an idea of what it should cost.  I intend to have everything done except painting.  Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you

there is, but I don't know it off hand. It's usually broken out between rocking and taping. Walls are easier to estimate by footage than ceilings.

It's expensive, especially ceilings. If there are soffits, cost and time run up dramatically.  You'll also want to know what kind of texture you want on your ceiling- popcorn, knock-down, or smooth.

Since you have a drop ceiling, you'll probably need some framing as well for the duct work and piping.

Are you talking just the labor or the supplies as well???

Some outfits will come in and do the mud/tape work after you hang it all yourself.

[I found this out only AFTER I had gone over and redid my basement twice... ]

I'm having my basement done for around $38 per board (~70 boards wall/ceiling, around 800sq ft). This includes mudding, taping, texture(knockdown). If anything, it'll give you a rough idea of what to expect.

be sure to run all your cabling if you are doing lights, speakers, stove venting for the main level or want to run additional electrical on the main level first before putting up your ceiling

Be sure to get references as well. Because of the low overhead, drywall seems to attract a lot of rookies / amateurs.
