any of you know of a good camera shop in MN ( or Lacrosse, WI area).  I need a couple of bodies serviced/ cleaned/ inspected before I leave for Africa?  In the next month I'll be in the NW, NE, Metro, and SE....so basicly anywhere but the SW and northern border will do.

thanks,

National Camera in Golden Valley is always a good choice.

I've gone to West Photo on University. Not sure if they do servicing or not tho. There is another one around MCAD that my sister went to in college, can't remember the name tho.

+1

National Camera in Golden Valley has served photographers in our family well for many years...  -  They usually do light repair/cleaning work.  If it's anything MORE INTENSIVE or for a camera that you value more, then we resort to Marquette Camera Repair (also in golden Valley area near 55 & 169.

They've done a little bit of the more SERIOUS work (shutter repair, sensor repair/replacement, full detail disassembly & cleaning, etc.)...  They can be expensive but they do a fair bit of good work for many professional photographers.

Their located in a goofy building, and their small office within the building (essantially a small custom repair shop) is a bit TOUGH to find within the building, but it's worth looking!

I'd give Nat Camera a call first, see if you can get a price quote for the work you want done as well as a turnaround time...  Then check with Marquette for an estimate & turnaround time...  If it's more intensive work I'd take it straight to Marquette.

I know they can do impressive work there...  I know shortly after Katrina hit the gulf, I was dropping off one of my father's cameras for detail cleaning, & some parts replacing, and some professional photographer came into the shop with one of the newer Canon digital models - their top of the line at the time (I forgot the model), and he was cussing up a storm & kicking himself!  The Genius was near the coast taking photos of incoming waves, and one hit the shore, and a 14' wave went right over the top of him!  Totally drenched his new digital camera (he only had it a couple months at the time)!!!

He fled the coast, and flew back to MN, but he's still kicking himself for taking that camera anywhere NEAR water!  The shop said they could fix it, but I don't want to know what the price tag was on that repair!

I just got my "disposable camera" in the mail today.  got it off ebay for $25.  it's a Ricoh KR-10.  it's a fully mechanical body, has a pretty nice light meter scale, and a mechanical timer.  i wasn't sure what i was going to get for $25, but everyting works and looks pretty good.  the best part is that it takes my Pentax K-mount lenses, so I don't have to invest in anything else.  over the years I've acquired a few economy K-mount leses that will be coming with me to Madagascar.  now i just need to get this camera in to get a good once over to see if it is actually worth bringing....if not I've got a few Pentax bodies to choose from, also.
