I am trying to figure out what is the best long term storage solution for my AR. Its humid as hell in the summer (as you all know) and i dont have enough money to buy a safe or a pelican case for that matter. I bought a silicon impregnated sock but i fear thats not enough. Any suggestions?

Clean it with denatured alcohol and coat down all the parts with lube afterwards.  Remove the BC/CH and disassemble the bolt.  The Denat. Alcohol will remove all the water and it should be GTG.  Perhaps a gun sock inside your gun case?  If you need to store it for longer than a year or two, then you should pack it in grease.

i dont think there will be a period where its away for more than 12mon. The big problem is affording ammo while i am in school. Thanks for the tip.

If you know you won't be using it for a while, just lube it liberally with oil.  The gun store will have several products to use.  In the past I've just used BreakFree and had excellent results.  Give the gun a good cleaning then wipe all surfaces with a rag that is damp with the stuff.  Push a soaked patch through the bore.

When you are ready to shoot it again, field strip it and wipe down all excess that remains and run a dry patch or two through the bore to remove the excess oil you left in there.

Really, it shouldn't be a problem.  If there are areas wear the finish is worn, give it an extra soaking with BreakFree or whatever you choose.

I also suggest pulling it out of storage once in a while (like every 4-6 months), and give it a good, quick, once-over inspection...

Take out the bolt carrier group, look inside for corrosion, check the barrel under the handguards, and other places where rust patina can appear over time...  I suggest taking a rag, put some drops of oil on the exterior of the gun as well, and wipe it down so you've got some oil protecting exposed areas from rust.

That should help as well as what MCN and others have suggested.

I have had good luck with a Golden Rod. I would think if you put one in a inexpensive gun cabinet or even old school locker might be good option until you get a safe. Also a air conditioned part of house obviously helps.

If your AR has a chrome lined bbl, then you don't have much to worry about unless you shoot it in the rain and then put it away uncleaned and unlubed.
