Just got my license tabs renewal notification in the mail today.

There's a new $5 "wheelage tax" on this latest renewal notice, and it applies only to vehicles kept in Anoka, Dakota and Washington counties. No explanation is given about the origins and purpose of this tax.

Just what the hell is a "wheelage tax" anyway?

IIRC its something to do with if you "park" or store your vehicle in those cities.

Something the legislature approved this year.  If counties want, they can add their own wheelage tax, up to $5.  Those are the counties that have passed it, so far.

It's the local version of the states' license plates.  It's somewhat analogous to what you might have seen on cars from the Chicago area, with their little city stickers in the lower right corner of their windshield.  I don't think that the local counties are actually sending out the stickers, just charging us the tax.  It's just an entry level amount, $5, to get us used to paying the tax so that they can raise it later without us raising a ruckus.

I think Duluth has something like that on vehicle sales to residents.  Even if you live in Duluth and bought a vehicle in Bloomington, they would make you pay the sales tax.

The tax is a punishment tax for not riding the bus or the train.  In other words, they are taxing you for choosing to not be under the thumb of government...

Jokes about us throwing things in the water seem kind of untimely, but we need to have a serious tax revolt.  Perhaps after enough small businesses flee the state, the collective representatives will figure out that taxing the piss out of everything isn't the answer.

This nation threw off the yoke of the English monarchy because of taxation which was much less than what we currently paying.

We are in the process of incremental socialism.

Time for a Boston Tea Party again.  Let's toss all the legislators into the bay this time

Thanks for the link.

I own a car but ride the bus to and from work everyday. Guess I'm double screwed, then.

A tax revolt?  You want only to stop there?  This needs to go much further than a simple tax revolt.
