Sorry I missed the shoot on Saturday. But I had a little excitement in my neighborhood Saturday night. I was going to post something earlier, but I was looking for any news article about this. But I guess it isn't news worthy because no one got hurt. Around 2 am I was sitting watching Enemy at the Gates and and gun fire starts going off right in front of my house, 4-5 shots. My Taurus snubby was right next to me, I grabbed it and hit the frickin' deck. Nothing for about ten seconds so I go to peek out my blinds and 4-5 more shots go off. I couldn't really see much because I got a big Black Walnut tree in front of my house. The only thing I saw was a guy getting into a Caprice Classic and drive away. Not sure if he was the guy doing the shooting. When I called 911 they already had calls and knew what block it was on. The cops showed up pretty quick and there was about 5 or 6 squads in front of my house. The only info I got was from hearing the cops talking amoungst themselves. There was a party next door someone started a fight, they got the guy outside and he pulled a gun and started bustin' off rounds. I don't think anyone was hurt because there were no ambulances there. No bullet holes in my house or truck, I didn't see any in any of the neighbors houses. My neighborhood is usually pretty mellow, all small single family houses; not too many rental properties. The neighbors are keep their property up and work, aside from the people next door to me. This spring I am selling my house and getting the Hell out of the Eastside. I got enough equity to buy a chunk of land in the middle of the sticks. So I got two questions for you guys, how far do I have to move out of the cities to start getting into some cheap land? North, south, east, west; I don't really care about the direction. 5+ acres , I would like to stay under 40K. If that is possible. Second and most important question, any place locally to buy body armor? Don |
You should really speak with a Real Estate agent in regards to this, but I would think you would be looking at Pine County on the north side, Meeker on the west side and Nicollet county on the south side. I have a client that just made an offer of $160k on 3 acres in Hastings area. That's 40 minutes out of DT SP. LMK if you need help. |
Check out the EE Section of ARFCOM if you want to pick some up. But, seriously, like having a gun, it's only good if you have it with you all the time. Are you really going to wear body armor every day? You did right by hitting the deck and having your pistol with you, then calling the cops. I always make sure my doors are locked 24-7 even when I am home just because you never know when someone fleeing the scene might try to take refuge in your house. |
Quite a ways. Areas like Princeton (where we were this weekend) are considered extended metro area now. Land has started to get pretty expensive there. Same with areas like Rockford, North Branch, etc. Those are the ones I know of because they're in my corner. You're probably looking at 1:15-1:30 hours from either downtown before land starts getting cheap. |
Yep. I used to leave my doors unlocked 24/7 around here. Then I started locking them at night when one of our cars got tossed. Now they get locked 24/7. I walk in the door, I lock it behind me. Drives the wife nuts. Until I reminded her that last year there was a guy with an AR shooting people across the river and when the police cornered him he crossed (or tries to) cross the river to our side for exactly what Mike said, refuge. Same reason when I do take off my carry piece at night it sits right next to where I happen to be until I go to bed when it moves to the nightstand. And I live in the relative sticks compared to some of you guys. |
Yep, I am planning on going through a realitor. I am just brainstorming now. The further out of the cities the better for me. I might be even thinking about going west, far west Montana, Wyoming, or Alaska. Don |

Not that this is the only reason for me wanting to buy body armor, I have been wanting to pick up some for awhile. Ya know for SHTF and deer hunting. I keep my doors locked 24/7, it's a habit I have had ever since I moved to the cities. I just recently got my permit to carry so I am starting to carry my snubby all the time or it is right next to me at the house. Don |

The best deals on land are the ones found just by driving around. A lot of the farmers around here hate realtors. They sell their property by sticking up a sign and sitting back and waiting. In other words, go driving down all the roads in areas you want to live. |

Land in Kanabec county is still fairly reasonable, and Taxes aren't real bad yet. |
5+ Acres between 40K and 50K Report (I'm a licensed agent but not real active, I know some agents who are very good though if you need a referral reference) |
