| I am a resident of MN but attend school in Michigan. Michigan law says you need a CCW permit to transport a handgun, even in your trunk. I'd like to bring my pistols out to school with me so I can go shooting. I know there are classes that are one day and on the weekends. I would need to attend one of those classes as getting home during the week is tough. Anyone have an idea of where I could find when/where I could take a weekend class sometime soon? I need to request my weekends off from work soon and need to do it when there is a class offered. I don't care if the classes are up North or down by the cities. Any ideas? |

Most will agree that the Defensive Edge is a top outfit. You will get a ton out of a class from them. Next class is on June 11. Check out the comments in the Tactical Pistol thread here in for reviews (day 1 of that was similar to handgun 1). www.defensive-edge.net |
| I see the Defensive Edge wants you to bring a permit to purchase for credentials. Since I am living in MI, it's a little hard to come home for 1 weekend to get the permit and then another weekend to get the training. Do most places require a permit to purchase before enrolling? I'd like to avoid having to make two trips home if possible. |

I'm not entirely sure about the Permit To Purchase thing... I was required to bring in a copy of mine before attending the D.E. courses. I think it's a way to ensure that only law-abiding gun owners are able to attend the D.E. courses. I don't think I'd want to take a course standing beside some Felon with a thick rap-sheet who's in illegal possession of a firearm... Likewise, I wouldn't want a person like that to have access to firearms training that would make a felon more proficient in the use and tactics that are learned in D.E. courses. I kind of like that requirement! That way you're learning along side a wide variety of shooters with varying backgrounds, but you can likely bet that they are not criminals... You might also want to check into it... You're a MN Resident, but you're in (College?) in Michigan... Do you have PARENTS who still live here, and is that considered your permanent residence for purposes of taxes/gov't records? Is your Driver's License still a MN Lic.? If your parents are still living here and you're going to school somewhere else, you can use their address for your Permit to Purchase (but you must also list your Michigan address as one of the places you lived in the past 5 or whatever years) in MN. Likewise, you can use that address for your CCW Permit as long as your DL lists that as the primary/permanent address. My CCW Permit was issued in Le Sueur County, not Hennepin County (where I attended the University of MN). If your Permanent Address is a MN Address you need to apply for your CCW Permit in that County. The funny thing is if you change your Drivers License Address, you must also change your CCW PERMIT address within 30 days (or be fined)... You must ALWAYS change your CCW PERMIT address at the County Sheriff's Office where you were initially issued the permit (not at the office of the new county)... Here's another little hint (Pointed out to me by an AR15.com Member this past weekend): WHEN YOU CHANGE THE ADDRESS ON YOUR PERMIT FOR $15 (or whatever it costs), THEY UPDATE THE 'EXPIRATION DATE' ON YOUR PERMIT TO 5-YEARS FROM THE ADDRESS CHANGE, NOT 5 YEARS FROM THE INITIAL ISSUE DATE!!! My permit was initially supposed to expire in 2008, not it's listed to expire in 2009 instead... If you changed your address to update it right now your permit would thus be valid until 2011!!! That kind of makes me look forward to moving out of my apartment next spring (Have a permit valid until 2012)!!! In reality though, the Defensive Edge course is WORTH THE PERMIT TO PURCHASE HASSLE... My brother, a former police officer, and sometimes a stubborn, closed-minded individual certainly had his eyes opened, and his mindset turned around COMPLETELY last weekend at the Handgun course (not to mention his shooting accuracy increased 10-fold, and he scored a 94% on his Qualification target)... He's excited to go back for more training now (when before he was SO RELUCTANT to get training that I HAD TO PAY FOR HIS COURSE just to get him out there)! Now he can't wait to buy a Glock & get back out there... |

Check out www.twincitiescarry.com/forum/ their is about 30 instructors on the site and they post their classes. The guy who owns the site is Joel Rosenberg and who I took my carry class from. Give the site a look to find an instructor in your area. Hope this helps! |
