...the Marine Corps. Originally, I thought active duty was the only way to go in the Marines, but then I found out that there's a reserve MP unit right here in the cities. I'm 21, got a good head on my shoulders, going to school for law enforcement, and have a great paying job in the grocery biz as a department head. Lately, I've felt the need to to give something back to my country, and I was thinking this was the way to do it.

Anyone have any tips, pointers, things to ask the recruiter? I'm going in again tomorrow to watch the recruit training video the recruiter has. Any pros/cons going the Marine Reserve route? I don't really have anyone in my family that has served in the armed forces that I can ask questions to.

Thanks for any guidance.

Go for it.  I was active from 88-94.  Just make sure you get in your contract what you want.  When I signed at the MEPPS in 1987, it took some prodding to actually get a slot in the MOS I wanted.  Everything is lip service until you actually sign the papers at the MEPPS station after you take your physical and are OK to go to Boot Camp.  BTW, my MOS was 6317 (F/A-18 Avionics Tech).  Otherwise, get into shape and be able to run and run and run.  Boot Camp is more of a mental challenge than a physial one if you arrive to MCRD in shape.   Also, have fun with it.  Take the training seriously, but don't get down on yourself.  You will graduate.

I don't have personal military experience but I can give you some law enforcement advice career advice due to watching my brother and cousin persue careers in LE-

Any military service should help you pursue an LE carrer BUT you will still need a Bachelor's degree to be a cop in MN. You should keep this in mind. Don't stop taking classes while in the service.

When taking classes work toward a degree. If you end up transferring schools you can get screwed here and there because they will say that your course work is not equivalent from school to school. It is harder for colleges to say that degrees are not equivalent.

Anyone can do just fine here with an associates degree in LE. Best thing you can do for yourself is to get experience somewhere. I've been on interview boards for LEO positions. I can't tell you how many people show up with bachelor's degrees and absolutely no clue what the job is about because they didn't do anything other than go to school.
