Cruised down to Sportmen's this morning with the intention of throwing down some greenbacks on a new 1911. Picked out a Springfield FullSize Loaded in Stainless. Nice gun. Filled out all the paperwork, called it in, DELAYED....again. Every other time I buy a gun (long gun or pistol), my call in comes back as a delay. Last time it happened at Sportmen's I just got out of the parking lot and the store called and said I got my proceed call. I don't have any criminal history, I give my social, and my name is not John Smith, it's actually rather unique. WTF...? Other than just being a pain in the butt, it's not a big deal. I don't NEED another handgun today, but I WANT IT, I WANT IT, I WANT IT....

A guy I know that holds an FFL got delayed at SW in Fargo last night.  He said the same thing, he has never been delayed.  And, he had given all the specifics, too!  Oh well!

My FFL told me I had a week delay on my last transfer.  I said, "A week?  Aww, but I'm mad NOW!"

You ain't seen delayed until you've done an NFA weapon.  6 MONTHS!  Now that's delayed!

Delays generally happen with someone who has your name goes and does something bad...

The delay is them punching in the social, etc. Up front, it looks bad, but it takes time to dig...

At least that's my understanding.

It helps if you have a name like Fore Jeoirocw or something; kinda hard to mistake

Got the call from Sportsmen's this afternoon with the Proceed...   I'm tempted to beat feet down there this evening, but I imagine I can wait till morning and pick it up after work. Always comes out good in the end, but the process is a pain in the butt. I'm working on getting my FFL so perhaps that may ease the pain.

Your time is coming.... My name is far from common. All kinds of things can trigger a delay I am told. Can even be the result of trying to call in at a busy time of day or season. I find it humorous to see the reaction some people have when they get a delay, especially for the first time. They often get really bent out of shape because there is a possible accusation of criminal history by being delayed. Not the case, just a minor inconvenience.

Its a ploy  I always buy an additional handgun when I come back after a delay...

I was delayed one time.  I was actually LEO at the time, and buying a simple hunting rifle, I don't have a "normal" name, and I have no criminal history.  The guy told me that sometimes the call center is just too busy to do all the checks, and they would delay for that reason.   One business day later he called and told me I was good to go.

I did the same. Picked up my 1911 Monday morning, then bought a Ruger Super Six minutes later, no problem. There is a form though if you buy more than three handguns in one month that the seller is to supply to the ATF.
