If you don't have a CCW Permit (and even if you do) go buy yourself a can of good Mace/PepperSpray.

There are only two that I know will work very effectively:

Fox 5.3 S.H.U. Pepper Spray
Freeze +P OC/CS Mace

Either of them will serve you VERY well, and both are frequently used by police officer with great results.

Even if you have a CCW permit and carry a firearm, you're likely to find many hostile encounters you will have are non-lethal in nature.  (ex. Fist Fights/pushing matches, or other things with unarmed attackers)  Mace will either level the playing field or give you an advantage.  Spray in 1 second bursts, aim for the face/eyes.  If you're greatly outnumbered, 3+ to 1, then draw handgun if you have CCW.  With those odds you're likely to not survive even with mace.  You'd be surprised how quickly a can of mace will go empty.

Is a leather sap illegal? I didn't think so, but, I have an older relative who has carried one for decades and never left home without it.
