In case anyone is needing an updated classification, we are having one as the match tomorrow at BGSL

I have got to get out to one of these matches. I need to broaden my experience beyond my current club.

I love KPDL but I need to see more clubs to learn more stuff and shoot more stuff.

Just an amusing observation...

I did not need any updated classifications (I have recently classified in everything I shoot) so I shot BUG. I shot my M&P 9c.
I tried to see just how fast I could go with it and still expect to hit the zero ring or head. I shot it in 124.8 sec (points down included). Much to my amazement, that is Expert in BUG.
Bottom line, if you want an Expert classification in something, go for BUG. The bar is set too low.

RJ-

There are lots of somewhat local clubs.

Just west of Lewisport, KY is ORPCI.  www.orpci.org  USPSA is 3rd Saturday of each month.

Park City- www.rockcastleshootingcenter.com  USPSA is 4th Saturday of each month.

I think Bluegrass runs USPSA 1st and 3rd Sundays.  www.bgslinc.com

Thanks!

Can I expect a reasonably relaxed first match with those clubs?

Relaxed atmosphere?  Yes.  Just let them know you've not shot USPSA before.  I know the match directors at all three clubs personally and they're friendly, helpful people.

At any match you'll run into someone who thinks their time on the range is more important than everyone else's, but fortunately all of these matches usually draw large enough crowds that there are plenty of people there just to enjoy a day at the range with like-minded individuals.

If you go to BGSL to shoot any of the three fun pistol games (Steel, IDPA, or USPSA). you need to do a new shooter check if you have never shot an event there before. It is a review of safety rules, rules for the game you are about to shoot, and a simple demonstration that you are safe with the handgun. After you do it once, you don't have to do it again. You do have to arrive about an hour early to do the new shooter check.

There is also a monthly IDPA match in Crittenden (http://www.idpa.com/clubprofile/northernkystraightshootersassociationnkssa) and another monthly match at the Adair Co club (http://www.adairsportsmen.org/). Both are run by a good bunch of guys.

The Ashland Gun Club (http://www.agcpd.com/) also runs IDPA and USPSA matches.

If you don't mind crossing the river, there is also Silver Creek (IDPA & USPSA) just over the river in Indiana (http://silvercreekcc.org/).

This sounds fun. I will have to get into this eventually.

For anyone that has never shot any of the typical handgun games, Steel matches are generally the least intimidating, have the fewest rules to learn, require the least equipment, and are a pile of fun. It is a great way to dip your toe in the water without much investment.

What's not to like about trying to shoot 5 plates as fast as you can 5 times in 6 or 7 different configurations?

Thanks for the info, I'll keep it in mind.
