I'm getting my first suppressor in a month or so (well starting the process).  Does anyone know if there is a charge to get the CLEO to sign off on it or a wait?  Also does the CLEO in Elizabethtown ever have any issues?  I'm wondering about that part because I know in Manassas VA you could get it signed off easy but Alexandria 20min away was a definite no-go.

Also any additional advice for my first time other than patience?

Check with Shooter's Express in the Houchens Shopping Center. They're Class III  w/ stock on hand and should be able to answer all your questions.

Yep, shooters should be able to tell you.  I haven't heard of anyone having any issues getting a signoff and I know some local guys with cans.

Is there ever a cost to get the sign off?

There can be. It's up to the Sheriff if he wants to charge a processing fee.

How long does it usually take for the Cleo to process it?

I didnt know you could do that so no lol   I've actually been too busy to even run to Sporter Expess which is behind my house so I figured I'd ask people that have been through the process.

Finally got to Sporter Express today and they clarified for me that there is no wait and no cost.

But they said to have a supressor sent to them from an online store would cost $100 and be an additional 2 month wait.  Is this normal?  They were trying pretty hard to sell me a YHM so I'm wondering if that was just to help push that sale.

Two month wait is for a Form 3 transfer from dealer to dealer. The $100 transfer fee is about right. The reason they become dealers is to make money and if they don't charge for a transfer what are they getting out of the deal beside impatient customers calling every two weeks and bugging the crap out of them?

JJ, one of the owners at Sporters and I used to be really good friends.  He's pretty straight forward (used to be anyways, we don't really talk anymore).

Although, I tried to educate him on the fact that with a Trust, no CLEO sign off is required.

It was like this.

Me - I want a trust so others in the family can play with and have access to my toys PLUS no CLEO sign off.

JJ - You still need a CLEO sign off with a trust.

Me - uh uh

JJ - uh huh

Me - Nope

JJ - That's what I was told

Blank stares at each other and it was dropped.  Hopefully he's figured it out now.

ETA: to answer the question, he said the CLEO will sign off down there.

After buying a MG and a supressor I did a Quicken Trust. My next transfers were smooth and easy plus now my trustees have full access to the gunsafe. It now takes about 30 minutes to complete my paperwork and drive to the Post Office and mail everyting off. Before the Trust the whole process took an entire day unless I happen to catch the Sheriff when he wasn't busy.

Yep, Trust is the way to go.  For us anyways.

How hard is it to get a trust and how long does that take?  If I get the suppressor using a CLEO now can I go back and change it later to be covered by a trust?

A Trust is extremely easy to for using Quicken. From the time I put the disc into my D drive to the time I was taking the paperwork out of the printer was under an hour. After that I just drove over to City Hall to see the Notary and it was a done deal.

If you want to transfer your stuff to a Trust later on you'll have to pay the $200 tax per item.

That sounds a lot easier.  Is this what I would need to get? "Quicken WillMaker Plus 2012 estate planning software".  And all I have to do is print it and get it notarized and then thats it?  Is there anything else I'll need to set this up?  I was always led to believe its expensive.

It really is that easy. The hardest part was gathering trustee information and since they are all immediate family members it really wasn't much of a chore. Once you fill in the blanks you print it, along with your declaration of trust, and off to the Notary Public you go. When toy time comes you fill out your form 1 or 4 and send a Trust copy with it. No photo, fingerprints, CLEO signature, or background check needed.

As far as expense, I found Willmaker software from a previous year and got it for $10. I do know there are dealers that will let you fill in the blanks on their computers and let you print them out. Of course some will argue that a lawyer is the best way to go but for $500+ I'll just leave out the NFA verbage and leave instructions, a copy of a completed Form 5, and the numbers of a couple local C3s with the Trust for my trustees.

For some reason I'm not following that sentence.

I found the will maker software on Amazon for $15, hopfully it gets here before my Suppressor does.  Theres no verification of the people I list in the trust? just list them and be done with it?
If this works that easy I'll definately be getting some more.

Most of the gun wording in an "NFA Trust" (there's actually no such thing) relates to disposition of the toys once the Grantor departs for that great machine gun shoot in the sky. By having a sample Form 5 (a tax-free transfer to your heirs), instructions, and contact info for a C3 guy/gal you've just covered some bases and answered some questions the transferees will have.
