Tong joins with 21 other AG's to file another lawsuit, this time against the Department of Education. Tong sues Dept. of Education over student loan forgiveness eligibility restrictions Connecticut Attorney General William Tong and 21 other attorneys general sued the U.S. Department of Education on Monday. The lawsuit alleges that the department of education unlawfully restricted the eligibility for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program. The program allows government and nonprofit employees to have their federal student loans forgiven after 10 years of service. Tong, and other attorneys general challenged a federal rule that would make certain state and local governments along with nonprofits ineligible employers for PSLF, if they were determined to have engaged in actions with substantial illegal purpose. The attorneys general allege that the federal government could essentially punish governments or organizations that participated in activities that are disfavored by the Trump administration. “Donald Trump and Linda McMahon want to impose an illegal MAGA litmus test on billions of dollars in loan forgiveness for public servants, Tong said. “Engage in protest? Loan forgiveness yanked. Care about immigrant families? No loan forgiveness for you. Believe in the promise of diversity or support LGBTQ+ kids? Yanked. These are teachers, nurses, police officers, firefighters, and others on the front lines of our communities who would have the promise of aid reversed after years of following the rules and doing the right thing. This is cruel, this is wrong, this is against the law, and we’re suing to stop it.” Tong was supported by Democratic members of the House and Senate, including Sen. Richard Blumenthal, Rep. John Larson and Rep. Rosa DeLauro In July, 11,840 Connecticut borrowers have had their loans forgiven through PSLF, according to the Connecticut Student Loan Ombudsperson and based on information provided by the U.S. Department of Education. Tong and the other attorneys general are asking the court to declare the rule unlawful and bar the Department of Education from enforcing or implementing it. |

U.S. Justice Department sues Connecticut for failure to provide voter registration lists The United States Justice Department has filed a lawsuit against the state of Connecticut for failure to produce full voter registration lists upon request, the department announced Tuesday.
According to the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, accurate voter rolls are essential to ensuring that Americans’ votes are counted only once and that they are all eligible voters. The Department of Justice has sued 23 states and the District of Columbia for failure to provide voter roll data, and seeks to pursue more lawsuits. “Accurate voter rolls are the foundation of election integrity, and any state that fails to meet this basic obligation of transparency can expect to see us in court,” U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi said. The lawsuits cite the National Voter Registration Act and the Help America Vote Act, which were designed by Congress to ensure that states have proper and effective voter registration and voter list maintenance programs, the department stated in a press release. Connecticut Attorney General William Tong released the following statement in response to the lawsuit: “We tried to work cooperatively with DOJ to understand the basis for their request for our voters’ sensitive personal information. Rather than communicating productively with us, they rushed to sue. The State of Connecticut complies with federal law, and takes its obligations under federal laws very seriously, and we will vigorously defend the state against this meritless and deeply disappointing lawsuit.” Connecticut Secretary of State Stephanie Thomas issued the following statement: “I am not surprised that Connecticut has been added to the long list of states being sued on these grounds.
