I don't want to beat a dead horse, but I'm gonna beat it to a bloody pulp anyway.
My daily driver is a 22 year old car that was doing just fine until 7 years ago when they started with this crap on the roads here in CT. Now it has holes, I have to replace brake lines and other stuff. It looks like shit, and is badly rusted. I used to live in Ohio in the 75-84 and had to deal with awful road salt there. In 1977 I bought a brand new car and it was completely rotted out in 4 years. The only reason my current car isn't completely crap now is I don't drive much (less than 5,000 miles per year). Otherwise I would have had to junk it several years ago. Two days ago I drove 4 miles when most of the road was dry except a 1 mile stretch had a dusting of blown snow that they had dumped a shit ton of salt onto. My car is covered in salt!!! So much salt is on my car from that 1 mile stretch that there are dried up puddles of salt on my driveway where I parked. It is fucking unreal! I used to be a mechanic in another life for 20+ years (Porsche, Mercedes, Ferrari, Opel, etc) and had to deal with salt damage on lots of cars (electrical, brakes, bodies, frames, and many other parts), so I know about this shit. My wife's car had 195,000 on it last summer, and I could have easily gotten her another 25 to 50 thousand if it weren't for the damn salt. She hadn't had a car payment in about 12 years. However, I had to convince her to buy a car this past summer for no reason other than the fucking rust caused by the assholes covering the CT roads with salt. I am so fucking pissed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Yup. The chemicals added with the salt are horrible. Other states use a rust inhibitor which does not cause corrosion on metal. But it's more money of course. And not buy much. Save money on the roads, make people buy cars every 5 years. Win win for the state. And let's be honest. Any new vehicle is not built to last 10 years now. And I now refuse to pay for a new vehicle to have it rot out as it is getting payed off. I drive 10k a year tops in my personal truck because I have a company truck. And it will just sit in the driveway with no miles, getting rot. I'm leasing now. It works better for me financially and with my lifestyle.

I grew up in Central NY. They used so much road salt there to keep roads cleared that even when the roads were clear they were pure white.
Cars rust out up there quickly. In the old days they would be so rusted that there were huge holes within 5 years. Now cars are better protected so they last longer but still corrode quickly. Especially if you don't wash them regularly or use the commercial car washes which use reclaimed water. In the winter this water is full of salt. Basically washing your car with brine. We, along with most everybody, had "winter rats". These were cars to drive in the winter that you did not care about. Much like owning snow removal equipment you needed a winter rat if you live there. This state went to the liquid and a heavier application of salt because of liability and overall cost. That mud they used to put down would require a sweeper come spring time plus cleaning all the catch basins. Now you almost never see a sweeper or catch basin cleaning truck. Trust me, Dan Malloy is not smart enough to think about this helping car dealers sell more cars. He is too stupid for that. He thinks 400 high paying GE jobs will be replaced by jobs at a minor league baseball stadium in the ghetto and a professional hockey team in an dead arena in a dead city. The guy is a moron. He can't even form a sentence without ums and aws. That is a sign of low intelligence. |

| I have an 06 accord with 319k and the bottom still looks fairly fresh.no major rust spots at all. Brake lines are good as well. It has a lot to do with the car company's ability to prevent rust imo. Places in northern Maine don't use salt or sand, and vehicle still rot out. |

You'd expect a craphole country not to care about the environment. This is why you get little to no proper steel protection and coating adhesion. This crap has caused me a few bucks, that's for sure.
The problem you're having with your car is from magnesium chloride and not rock salt. Car manufacturers have been building their cars with additives in the paint, as well as rust inhibitors in the metal, to prevent rust corrosion from road salt, for a couple decades now. Rarely do you see a rusty car in New England, unless the car was made before the mid eighties. But no one planned on the chemical reaction from assholes putting MAGNESIUM on the fucking roadways! Those white lines you see on the roads, just before an expected snowfall, is the highway departments spraying a mixture of powdered magnesium, mixed with salt and water. It dries almost immediately on warm asphalt... But once the snow hits it, your car or truck is FUCKED! Magnesium is an extremely flammable mineral. Ever go camping and get yourself those crystals that turn the campfire all sorts of different colors? That's little chunks of magnesium, sprayed with bits of zinc, nickel, copper, sulfur, etc, in order to achieve the different colors. Different minerals burn different colors. The reason they burn so brightly, and for so long, is because of the magnesium. Also... Ever hear about the chemical reaction you get when you take a galvanized washer and use it with a stainless steel bolt? Or ever see the damage if you use zinc roofing nails on copper flashing? Or maybe a brass screw with a zinc washer? After a while, those two different metals will eat at one another. They don't really "rust"... They "pit". The metal becomes brittle and flakes away, with a strange corrosion that looks similar to calcium buildup around heavy water. And that's why it's important to make sure you use coated screws with a hinge that's of a different metal, or make sure you use copper nails with copper flashing. That chemical reaction is called galvanic corrosion. So, when you combine the natural "toxicity" of magnesium, and put it up against the chemical reaction of galvanic corrosion (when the magnesium hits the under-body of your car or truck), you get the damage caused to our brake lines, fuel lines, calipers, frames, etc. There needs to be a class action lawsuit filed against the state, for the BILLIONS of Dollars in damage caused to everyone's cars, from this shit. Not that this God-forsaken state can afford a single claim filed against them... But I know garages who keep a guy hired to JUST repair damage done to cars, from this crap. It's bad. i believe there was one lawsuit a while ago, and it was put to rest very quietly. my dad was telling me about it. it was between a car dealership/repair shop and the state.
put a rust inhibitor in the mix of shit like other states do (maine). they take care of their environment better than ct does, so the whole "the streams and wildlife" comments and arguments are invalid that CT tries to use. i still think ct does this to rot vehicles out faster. |

It helps the stuff stick to the road and not wash off quickly. once it gets on your car,it sticks and absorbs water and doesn't wash off easily, and rots the shit out of it. I've had two trucks, a '00 chevy 1500 and an '04 chevy 2500 rot out from underneath me in the last 10 years because of this shit.
