So every year I save my pennies and use part of my tax return to buy something for me and it's always gun related. I have been focussing on my pistols since they are what's most likely to be with me in the event I need a firearm. Now with that out of the way I was thinking of building something a bit more for fun. I have a Reece well on its way so now I am thinking SBR. I have a vision in my head of a keeping a dedicated suppressor on it and running a hand guard over some of the suppressor since I use my support hand in a far forward shooting style. I would want to build this on a current complete rifle that is registered.
Assumptions
I need a SBR stamp, which I can get because I registered the rifle.
I need a suppressor stamp
I need a suppressor, thinking .30 based on various threads here.
I need a barrel, length TBD.
I need a hand guard with and ID that is greater than the OD of the suppressor I select.
Questions
Do I need to keep the barrel at least 12" counting the suppressor mount if pinned? I thought I remember a while back SB was saying under 12" is a pistol?
Is there anyway around paying for two seperate stamps on a build like this?
Any tips that you have learned along the way to make the process easier?
Any tips about products and companies used?

I have never ventured into class 3 because of the rediculousness of all state and federal laws but it's time to put my big boy pants on. I am not trying to reinvent the wheel here but I like to gather as much info and make a plan before I do anything. I am sure I could go thru the process on my own but why waste a strong current knowledge base. Any help is appreciated.

You could go,with an integrally suppressed upper. Only one stamp needed.

Hmmm interesting. I wasn't thinking about something like that but it's worth a look.

Interesting.

Does a pinned on suppressor (one that cannot be screwed off) on a short AR barrel (total 16" or more with the suppressor) constitute an "integrally suppressed" upper?  If so, is the entire upper (or barrel/suppressor alone) registered as an NFA suppressor, or something else?

The support hand forward hold can be uncomfortable with a can under the handguard due to the amount of heat created and retained by the can. Might be worth it to see if someone has one and run some rounds through it to see if it works for you. If not just get a heat resistant glove for serious round count days.

SBR....stamp
CAN....stamp.

Don't pin a can to a SBR. You will regret it.

Get a SDN6.

A few uppers in different calibers for your SBR.

Regret it legally, or mechanically?

What about welding a can to a barrel?  If the front can be opened to remove the guts for cleaning, what would be wrong with that?  Would that not be "integrally suppressed"?

I imagine because you'll want to us it on something else, but now you can't because it's stuck to one gun.

Exactly.  You are stuck with that caliber, that barrel,  that can combo for life.

Get a SDN6 (or whatever you want), use it on 556, 762 and 300blk. Put an adapter on 3 or 4 SBR uppers. Swap can around whenever you feel.

Also shorter barrels don't play nice with cans. The shorter you go the more erosion you will have.

That being said. There are manufacturersome that have complete integrally suppressed AR uppers. Buy online ship to you C3 FFL and then play the NFA wait game.

And if you have a permit and a registered AR I don't think the 12" rule comes into play as a worry

So I looked into integral uppers and yea I don't want to go that route. Even though the plan is suppressor dedicated to this build I still want flexibility for when I change my mind lol. Ok and so this shows my rookieness. My plan was for a more qcb rifle, however short barrel = even more deaf me. To counter that I though suppressor. I looked at the SDN-6 and it indicates min 10"barrel for 5.56 and the can is 6" so I would be back to 16" barrel. Need to really think about if this is a direction I want to head in since with suppressor on I gain nothing in length. Also I measured my rough hand position and it sits starting  at around 9" up to about 12" so I would only have a couple of inches of suppressor heat to worry about unless it gets the entire hand guard hot. I really appreciate the insight and time you all haven thus far.

I have a Saker 7.62 that I use on my AR15. Soon to be on an AR10 too. I can recommend the Saker.
