Discuss all things spring (season) related in this thread. Lawncare, construction, whatever.
I really just wanted to let y'all know today is a great opportunity to get your Grub-Ex down on your lawns. GrubEx needs about an inch of water to soak into the soil, and were supposed to get an inch of rain later today. This leads to a nice wet lawn tomorrow morning, too, to get your preemergent down. Setting up for a nice heavy seeding in mid April. Same weather pattern expected Monday, in case you can't get it down today. I'll be spreading a Lesco 18-0-9 mix tomorrow morning. Gentleman, start your spreaders! |

i use milky spore for grubs. its a bacteria that kills the grubs over the course of a few years.
here |

I'll be doing the same thing as you Zeg, except I wait until June to lay down the grub-ex. I forgot who told me but they said you should wait until early summer to put it down, for some reason this is the best time. I will most likely aerate my lawn and put down some fertilizer tomorrow, if the forecast still holds we are looking at rain over the weekend too.
The wife and I were hoping to use our tax return to have the driveway redone this year but I am thinking we may wait until next year and pay off our student loans this year. |

GrubEx, I need that shit bad!! It's worked in the past, this winter, my yard got tore up. That little bastard has to go. Spent the last 2 days working on finishing our screened in porch.....getting there, picking out the detail crap is left. Yep, same deal. I've got a fucking mole or ten that wreak havoc on my lawn. It's infuriating. And that fucker stayed busy at the surface nearly all winter long. |

Probably because it only lasts ~4 months. I'll have to reapply in June. |

I've got a buddy that swears by juicy fruit gum. They love it but can't digest it. He just pokes holes in the tunnels and leaves a stick of it in there. I'm gonna give that a try, too. Leave it under grade, though, cause birds will eat it too. |

I've got some sandy pastures that got eroded a few weeks ago in the storm. It's repaired but I need some hardy grass to hold it all together. I called Crop Production and got blown off so I'm bringing my own soil samples to the Gubmint to evaluate at no cost. soil sample
I wish I had more time. This weather is coming on fast. |

I put down fertilizer on the 6th. I have a very thick almost weed free lawn.
This weekend I will put the first of 2 applications of GrubEx.Tried milky spore but had bad luck. So I went back to Grub Ex. I am getting over a bad cold so I will not do too much this weekend. I do need to work up some loads with new powder to test. Next weekend I will get the lawn mower ready for another summer. |

News stopped at one of the local garden centers the other day to do a spot with the nice weather. One of them said it's still to early and cold to fertilize yet and to wait till the weather stays a little warmer. I just picked up a couple bags of fertilizer from BJ's (Scotts) and a couple bags of grass seed, so I'm ready to go. My yard needs some serious spring cleaning though. |

I don't think it's ever too early to fertilize so long as it's warming. It just depends what you're putting down. It is a little early, I think, to expect the best results from weed killers like the preemergent I'm putting down. The weeds are supposed to be just starting to grow. But, then again, my lillies are starting to pop up and a lot of the brush and trees are budding. I think normally it's too early. But not this year. |

I did Scotts in the fall and then late fall, and I have Lesco that Ill be putting down tomorrow.
A buddy has owned a landscaping business over in Granby for 10ish years. I don't buy or do anything without a thumbs up from him. I was told for this time of year I should be looking for a mixture thats 18-0-8, or if you can find it, 18-0-18. The Lesco I bought is 18-0-9, and I asked him before buying it. He said you can't go wrong with a Scotts or Lesco so long as the numbers are right for the time of year. Keep in mind, Im trying to build a lawn from a half grass half green weeds lot. If you already have a very established and healthy lawn you may need different mixtures. |

Sweet. Love Webers. My lawn guy hasn't started yet with lawn treatments and whatnot since it's still too early/cold. I like him and his crew. They all wear their Red Sox hats as they labor away. I like having Red Sox fans on the payroll. I am a firm believer in giving special needs people a chance at a job. I am nothing if not generous that way. |

What a waste of gasoline and money. You should just collect the road salts and spread em around. Quoted:

My favorite "lawn treatment" is pouring gasoline on it and lighting it on fire. I hate lawns! What a waste of time, effort, and money. What a waste of gasoline and money. You should just collect the road salts and spread em around. Or just let it grow. Tell your neighbors that your house decided to grow a beard. |

I have worked at getting a nice lawn. I think it makes your house look so much better.
Usually lazy people are the ones who don't care about lawns. You know Red Sox fans with their house on wheels and cars up on blocks.
I put down fertilizer only as the frost starts to come out of the ground. I don't use crabgrass pre-emergent any more. My lawn is 99% weed free and thick. With the pre-emergent you have to get it down before the seeds germinate otherwise you wasted your money. For weed control I mix up a sprayer with Weed-B-Gon and I manually spray each weed. I do this a few times during the course of the summer. I walk a pattern and as I see a weed I directly spray it. This works way better than the bags of Weed-N-Feed. Takes a little more time but the results are much better. Dandelions take 2 hits to eliminate. My neighbors are like group8. They barely mow the crabgrass and weeds they call a lawn. |

I'd love to get mine green and thick. But if I were to do that, I'd have to get a triaxle of dirt and have it leveled out. Then I'd hydro seed it and do all the happy horse shit to make it green.. It's almost so bad my beer almost splashes all over me in hi range wide open on the Bolens.. It's worse when your cocked doing it.

I do the same as edgephoto. Spray individual weeds. I've also been known to pull individual weeds from my entire lawn as well. I'm really OCD about weeds, well about life in general I guess.
Having said that, I just unplugged all of the outdoor xmas lights yesterday. Next nice day I'll wrap them all up. Also picked up all of the damn pine branches all over my yard. So in a way my yard has already been treated....to a nice layer of pine tree acid

Steevo, nice looking grill setup there. |

Quoted: I hate yard work...... I have given up trying to get a nice lawn. 1 of my dogs is part whippet/beagle and runs so fast she just tears up clumps of grass.... 1 day ill plant a lawn correctly. soon I will be looking to hire someone for a nice spring clean up ( raking ect of leaves and branches...) now with the new puppy ( Rhodesian ridgeback/ red bone coon hound mix) I cant wait till the lawn is dried out so no more muddy prints on the deck..... tomorrow I am hoping to hit a few granite places to see if I can find a remnant to cover the top of the grill island..... its a nice jenn air 5 burner, with rotisserie burner, and not sure if im going to add on it and build in the extra large big green egg ..... http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/sludwinjr/Mobile%20Uploads/46A59C5F-80BD-45B7-90C5-250FDCFAB40F_zpspq0tdlni.jpg Love Rhodesians, sounds like a great looking dog. The granite will be nice on there! |
| 1.25 acres of groomed lawn inspight of the asshole contractor who scrapped off the top soil. Ya I need to add soil and irrigation, but for what I have been quoted an M-16 sounds better. Still not a weed to be found. Hoping to be out of state in the coming year so not trying to invest much besides the time of dragging hoses around. |
| I am not a big lawn guy myself but I at least throw down fertilizer twice a year. Haven't found a good formula for the devil worms(grubs). I am starting my chicken coop tomorrow. Got 6 little ones in the basement that need a home. Have a huge tree in the woods that came down in the wind storm a few weeks back that I still need to chop up and haul out. Lots of work at the old homestead. |

Your OCD can't be that bad, I took our lights down like a month ago. Haha I like looking at them at night, especially when I bring the dog out, so I keep them on as long as possible. I was the only one in my neighborhood still running them I bridge my driveway with lights which are tied off into the trees, so it's not easy to get them down. |
