I have heard and read that the changes to the NRA Basic Pistol Course are projected to happen in March. They are moving to an internet training course followed with live fire with an instructor, seemingly cutting out the classroom portion.
If you would like someone you know to benefit from the experience of real instructor based course then now is the time. I have no idea what the price of the new course would be. But my guess is it will be set by NRA and then the instructor would set a price on the range time? That part I have no idea. |

After hearing some of the BS that comes out of "instructors" teaching this class I can't see how standardizing the content delivery would be bad. It's like anything else, there is the good and the bad. Seems we only ever hear about the bad ones though. |

There are no required classes for one to speak in public. There should be no required classes to purchase or carry a firearm.
Since there is currently a requirement for a permission slip in CT one must take a class. I have no problem with an internet class (it should be FREE or with a minimal fee such as $5). If someone wants more training they are not being prevented from doing so. |

I received a memo from them alerting me to the change, it was not explicitly clear in how the new system would work. What was being floated and had least backlash was an online pretest and digital portion to go with the online registration prior to the classroom date. This still received backlash as not evey student is computer savvy or has access to a computer. If they went beyond this and completely eliminated the online portion I don't see it working. I do a ton of hands on time during classroom instruction. The hands need to learn, not just memorizing parts and rules. I need to touch base with the Senior Instructor and see if he knows more. |

According to the email recently sent out to instructors, there is an expectation that the instructor facilitating part II will review the part I concepts with the student. My understanding is that there will be two fees- one to NRA directly for the online component and a second to the instructor who facilitates part II. |

As an instructor, here's the problem I'm having:
The local indoor ranges near me have decided its too risky to allow outside instructors to bring students who have taken this hybrid course. They will have no guarantee that the person that shows up actually took the online portion (may have had someone else do it) & they will be missing the classroom portion where they are familiarized with a firearm using dummy rounds. |
