I own one- pre ban, had a bad barrel! Had to buy another barrel-spensive going with usgi NM! Oh well, at least when it's done I will have a rifle that works

I did for a few years. It was a good rifle, but I found it heavy and the gas system cumbersome. That said, I had it rigged with a sadlak scope mount a ss 10x scope and it was a tack driver with surplus South African ammo, .

This particular rifle was all usgi parts , straight from springfield and came with the tiger striped birch stock... very pretty rifle...

When I sold it I got top dollar, over 2k. Paid 1200$ for it

100 yard target using SA surplus. It was spot on. I walked the scope over from right to left.

I have a SOCOM II with extend rail.  I don't shoot it much, but I did buy a scope for it over the summer.

I have a Socom II, it will be on the EE soon.  M1As sound great in theory, but nothing beats an AR.

One of my best shooting rifles, ever.  Mine was a Polytec that I built from the ground up because it had a horrible headspace when I bought it at Knob Creek from a fella there.

I went with a Douglas air-gauged barrel and had the chamber cut to shoot surplus (7.62 x 51).  Rebuilt the trigger and had a military bolt installed.

That's a ZOS scope on it mounted with an ARMS quick release mount.  The one thing about that rifle is that you want a good quality scope mount. I loved it.  I really did.  But I fell more in love with the DPMS LR 308B platform instead.  Same ammo, lots more possibilities although not too much lighter but easier to rebarrel and modify.  The M14s was what it was, a really super wood-bodied behemouth that really tamed that caliber.  Could never figure out why anyone would want to shoot it in auto.

I have a Super Match that I panic bought in June of '08 and I never use it.

Everyone must have known O was going to get in, because the cheaper models had already been sold out by that time.

Thank you. I refinished the stock that is on the rifle in the picture.  The tiger stripe came with it from factory.

Mine is a 1989 pre ban. I bought it in 97 or so for $900 in the parking lot of Blue trails range. Never functioned well, failures to eject! Sent it back to SA, they supposedly fixed it... still doesnt function! No way would i send it back again! My smith identified an area of concern that  requires replacing the barrel- in for the penny... in for the pound N all! Like i said.. at least i will have a rifle that functions, though kinda pricey with all i have in her.... bitch! Sadlak scope mount, NM usgi barrel, vortex scope, aac flash hider.... whatever

I have the 1st year M1A Scout / Squad...   I took the wood stock immediately (to save it from range damage) and after a BM59 folder for a while I did a surplus fiberglass stock Duracoated FDE

The only 308 MIL type rifle I could get excited over is a FAL with a folder.
A big maybe to a 91 with a collapsible stock. But I've shot them enough to know that I would rather have the FAL .

Short and light.

What's with all of the "pre-ban" talk on M1As? They're still perfectly legal in the state as long as they have a muzzle brake instead of a flash hider, correct?

Are the pre-bans just for people that want a flash hider, pistol grip, etc.?

Pretty much that and a piece of history

Has something to do with the quality of parts from an earlier era as well. Preban M1As command a premium even from buyers in free states. Not sure what years they consider good though.
