Read through this thread.

If I, a CT resident, find a 1974 Colt AR-15, SP1 for sale in another state, can I legally purchase it?  I have heard conflicting things.  I have been told that since it is specifically named on the banned list that no one can purchase an AR-15 at all.  I have also been told that since this rifle is 'pre-ban', made before 1994, then it is legal to purchase and own in CT.

Does anyone know for sure?  thanks!!!

Right now the general consensus is "buy it" because DPS says that any pre-ban (9/1994) is legal.

There are several shops transfering "banned by name" rifles, noone is sure on a finale answer but it could be argued that the laws states "Any" rifle before september 13, 1994 is legal to transfer and does not have to be registered.

This topic has been discussed at length in numerous prior threads. Read the actual wording of the law. Then read DESPP's reinterpretation of that law. Then call around. Some shops ARE selling and transferring banned by name prebans. Some shops are playing it safe and are not selling them.

I have read the law, and the reinterpretation of that law until my eyeballs bled, and the other threads.  I still don't understand it, and I sure as heck don't want to spend the money on calling an attorney for an opinion.  There's a lot of opinion on both sides of the issue.  Some say that the specifically named are still and always have been banned.  Some say nope.  Some say the opinion issued on the law was by a former commissioner so it has no weight.

The other sure thing is that I don't want to knowingly commit a felony.  Heck, I don't want to unknowingly commit a felony either! :)

And maybe I just have to pay the price for 'coming late to the party' so to speak.  Maybe all I should do is go buy a nice mini-14 with some 10 round magazines and call it a day.

Pre bans are good to good. Even if on the "list". Delta Arsenal in Wallingford has transferred several for me at $20 a piece. Good people there. Freedom Shoppe in New Milford also will transfer them. They are also great guys.

Thank God the OP didn't also ask about a concealed carry permit.  Sounds like someone needs a Vicodin and Tonic and also needs to remember that everyone here had to learn at one time as well.

Enjoy your SP-1.  I love them.

Thank you all.  I will call tomorrow to Newington GE and ask them about it.  I know they had a 1974 AR-15 there on consignment about 2 weeks ago.  Really nice rifle.

LOL, I do have a carry permit.  Had one in New York as well before I moved here.

Interesting... I didn't think NGX was doing the pre-ban thing.

But if you do find something else online/out of state to transfer in, I've had great luck with Delta in Wallingford. Cheap too. And they're all above the board, no "shady" shit with them..

But hide your dog in any case.

Delta has 5 or 6 prebans and they have been there a while. I'd try making an offer and see what happens.

Last time I went down and was talking to one of the guys and he said almost all of the prebans they get/have are on consignment and that's why the prices are jacked up. Its worth a shot though.
