Whats in a gas block? Is a gas block a gas block a gas block?

I only know I don't want an adjustable one, I think, and that I'd like to go low-profile so's to fit a rail over it if I decide to. Also, to save weight.

What would you's recommend? Its gonna be on a fluted 14.5" mid-length AR barrel. I was looking at YHM and DD, Im assuming its one of those "you can't go wrong" parts as long as you go with a reputable manufacturer.

School me, please.

This thread might help you build a lightweight rifle.

I'd see what BCM has to offer, and select what best fits my need from there.

There is indeed a difference.  Materials and quality control / dimensional control being the biggest consideration.

The concern on them is movement, sloppy fit, wrong sized holes, burrs, and possible wear.

You don't need super doper noveske six stage adjustable gas block, but you don't want to shop the bargain bin.

A lot of people like to have the front sight base shaved down, but this isn't the lowest profile option.

I meant to say BCM in the original post, with DD and YHM. All three of their low-pros look the same, only different in the price, and hardly at that.

Thanks for the reply. I guess the big difference Im looking at now is set screw v. pinch screw.

That thread is awesome.  Lets you build a lightweight without the huge cost of V7 parts.

What are you using for an upper?  I have a Mag Tactical Systems upper for a future build.  I'm thinking a lightweight PDW in 300BLK using the NEA Compact Carbine Stock.  All I would need is a tax stamp, barrel and stock.

+1 on aero uppers, they have a finish comparable to MEGA which is saying a lot.  Currently I prefer BCM blem uppers, because I like it to look like I operate.

But Zeger, I have always used YHM or Midwest industries low pro gas blocks. They use set screws, so just put some blue locktite on the screws before you tighten them down.  Oh and make sure your barrel is dimpled if you use set screw typegas blocks. No need for fancy or expensive gas blocks they all function EXACTLY the same......I'm looking at DD, shame on them haha.  Obviously the adjustable blocks are a different animal, and I have no experience with them, and I don't ever plan to get any.

ETA:  there are 2 different sizes of gas blocks, so make sure to order the right one.
.625 fits LW barrels
.750 fits m4, socom profiles

I have a YHM gas block (flip up front sight) on mine.  I like it.  It's built like a tank and the sight folds down low and gets out of the way when using a scope...and when the scope is removed it flips back up and locks securely, giving the business end of my AR the sillouette of a Galil.  It also works quite nicely with the Magpul hand guard, if that is your thing.

Thanks bender, great info. I would have definitely gone with a set-screw type, and the barrel does NOT have dimples for it.

Would a free float hand guard fit over the low pros you are familiar with? Its a mid-length system but I think Im going to try to cover the block with a rifle length free float.

Yea no problem man!  And now that I think of it the last one I did was a DD barrel with NO dimples.  I used a YHM lo pro gas block with set screws and blue locktite... I had issues in the beginning because I forgot locktite...lol.  Once I put the locktite on them I've had no issues at all.
But yea either GB I mentioned will fit under most rails.  I've used them under DD lite rails, DD RIS rails, and MI rails with no problems.  I can't see any issues with any others either.

I think mid length is out about 9 inches, so to cover the gas block you probably need an 11 or 12 inch rail or longer....so yea rifle length is what u need to fully cover it.
