Recently, Colorado announced they were looking into hiring people to act as bounty hunters, to shoot down federally controlled drones flying in their airspace. Well, the feds answered...
Drones in your backyard I don't know about you guys, but I'm not particularly fond of being spied on.
What would be the ideal, cost effective setup, in order to exterminate a few flying pests over your neighborhood? Obviously a suppressor. But what caliber would be ideal to pierce one of these things? Out of pure curiosity, mind you. |

50 BMG. If you are going to become a felon might as well go out in a big way.
I do not like the idea of all the tracking and monitoring that is going on. Bush was not shy to tell you what he was up to when it came to surveillance. This guy we have in office has really gotten out of hand. Good luck shooting one down without getting caught. |

Some kind of Mylar barrier, that blocks out the shape of a human figure from being visible from heat sensors. UAVs have a dozen different lenses and filters in their cameras.
Infra red LED lights help too. Actually hitting these things isn't the hard part. It's keeping yourself "off the radar" that's tricky. |
|
Some RC jets, like this one (eta and this one), are large enough were you could conceivably mount some sort of firearm to it. Could it get to altitude to engage a LEO or military drone? Probably not. Given enough time and money I'm sure its possible to build a counter drone if one really wanted to. And only money and ingenuity are needed to camouflage yourself or your house/yard against drones and their cameras/radar.
But one thing to keep in mind if your going to attempt to take one out. Some drones don't like that, and they will shoot back.

Let's face facts here, they aren't counting corn stalks....Shooting at them here in the diarrhea state will hit to many friendlies. |

something else you guys tend to not consider that honestly irritates the hell out of me: how do you know if the "drone" is a sureveilance drone being operated by a government agency? how do you know it's not a hobbyist?
Yes, I know that line sounds just like the excuses the gov spits out, but it's true. I used to be 100% anti-drone too, then I started thinking about it more. then I started doing a bunch of research on quadcopter technology (I'm a bit of nerd at times). I now personally own 3 different quadcopters, one of which runs around $800 NOT including the camera equipment required to fly it once it gets out of close viewing proximity. I used to have the mentality of shooting anything in the sky I thought was a drone. I now have the mentality of something completely different if any of my quadcopters were ever shot down by some bafoon thinking it was a government drone. and they are very easy to confuse too, because even the hobby ones like I have are capable of over 1.5 miles range from the transmitter, and up to 7,000 feet (which is obviously illegal to fly in as a hobbyist), and most of the normal sized ones (not the mini nano's, which one of mine is too) are equipped with 1 or more cameras, typically a gopro hero. google DJI Phantom. thing is sooooo badass and so much fun. maybe instead of going all nutso wanting to shoot any flying object down, maybe a few more of you can buy some to spy on the government, or to find new shooting areas, or to make sure the coast is clear before blowing that BMG off in your backyard lol. |

Kiss your copter goodbye!! I like your idea of spying on them. Somehow I think you will be arrested for flying over government installations. |

I almost live close enough to fly over to DESPP and check how long the line is lol. I live about 3 miles from there, and have about 1.2 miles range on the transmitter :( that'd be cool though if I could just fly over there quick every now and then to check anytime someone was curious how busy they were :p I must say, one of the coolest things I've ever seen in my life was july 4th fireworks from my uncle's plane as a child. It's like a whole new world seeing them while in high speed motion from above them or at the same elevation, while flying around them. you get the full 3 dimensional effect. I'd love to be able to experience that again, but no one I know owns a plane anymore. so maybe one of these days I'll buy a twin cam setup and fly a quadcopter around fireworks next year :) |

Are you going to take responsibility for yourself when that bullet you shoot in the air falls back to earth and kills someone? they really fall down? I thought they went into outer space. Maybe with luck it will hit a person on an entitlement program or a democrat. |

P.S. I'm now looking at quad- and hex-copters of larger size (3-4ft vs 1-2ft diameter), and capable of 12+ mile range and flight times way over the typical 10-12 minutes. they're several thousand dollars though. |
