Hey guys, now that I'm going to be moving into my first house I want a safe, so can anyone recommend me a good place to look for one....I'm looking for something in the 20-30 long gun range.

I'm new to gun safes, so which brands should I look at, and which should I stay away from?

I dont know much about safes, and I keep looking at cabelas site, but I can only imagine that they are overpriced as usual....?
Also, I wont give Hoffmans a penny, so anywhere else in the hartford area, or should I look on some websites?

Gardall with a combination lock not the digital lock is probably the best( my buddy is a locksmith swears by them. They are expensive though) Liberty and Cannon are good too IMHO.
Check Locksmith shops in the area they might have some decent stuff. Check company websites they will point you to local dealers.

Thanks guys, so my other half likes one of the liberty safes on the lowes site....
Kind of a pain in the ass though....says if ordered today it would be at the store or delivered to me in August
I noticed those kind of wait times on Cabelas site too.....is the wait normal for buying safes?

+1 They have a Winchester safe I have been looking at, it's the 24 gun model on sale for 649.99 right now. Great reviews on this safe and they have 2 other larger versions. I like how it has the locking bolts on all 4 sides of the door Great safe for the money !!!!!

Don't know what town you're in but I bought a Liberty at Center Sports in Columbia. They had a pretty big inventory at the time...

It's a in the steel! Your money, buy what you think is best but if you have any serious money invested you want nothing less than 7 guage

I'm not seeing gauges listed on any of the safes I've looked at...including the liberty safes.

I did see 12 gauge for the safe Cohiba linked above though.

Thanks for the heads up muzzleblasted....kinda far from me though lol.

Gotta ask a few questions first, 1. how much is your collection worth and 2. how much are you willing to spend on a safe?  From there you can choose what to buy.  The 24 gun Winchester from Tractor Supply is a decent budget safe in the $700 price range.  Can the sides be cut open, yes, is it fireproof for 4 days,no.  Its all up to you to decide.

The Tractor supply version is based on the Winchester Ranger series, but has less fire protection and more spokes on the handle.  It does have an electronic lock which only has a one year warranty on it, but you can purchase a 10 year upgrade for $75 from Winchester or change it out for a mechanical version if you would prefer.

If it's cheaper, there's a reason for it.
Get one that's over $2000.

I got mine at Center Sports in Columbia.

Thanks guys, I'm petty much looking to spend 1000-1500.
I am really liking the liberty 30 gun safe.  I just can't find one without a freakin 3 month wait.

I might throw cinder blocks on the sides so only the door is exposed too.

bought a field & stream at dick's last year $699.00 made in china.
Just bought a gardall 16 gun (model GF6024) list $ 1,450.)) ??  went to my local locksmith, paid cash ($1,000.00) and picked up at distributors warehouse myself. It too was made in china, but has a 1,400 degree 35 minute rating. dial combo is definitely better than my field&stream(Liberty) along with the fire rating. (590 pounds also)

arfcom area for safe discussion:

Hoffman used to have a lot of safes ... now its hit or miss.  you can try to call.

Cabelas ... same thing.   they used to have a lot.  they usually do have some nice ones tho.

Sportsmans in wolcott has 1 very nice libery safe in stock.   its really big and i think $2k.

DEF get an oldschool combination lock.   DONT get a digital one.

after reading thru the arfcom safe discussion area, some people who work at gun stores have stated that 80+% of their returns for faulty locks are the digital safes, and the digital safes represent a small portion of the total sales.
