Need help,  i found a Polytech m14 at a local shop. What i need to know is what is it's value.  I don't want to get this thing for a bad price.

Last I knew, the Norincos and Polytechs had a number of issues with soft steels, out of spec parts, and other wear that seems out of place. The receivers are generally okay, and are worth keeping to rebuild around but they may have metric threads and such.

With that said, I'd expect $600 or so. Expect up to $800 if it has nice woods and a few extras like magazines. But then again, pre-ban plays a big part in CT so I could be way off. I personally wouldn't pay much more than $700-800 for one, but on the higher end it would have to have a bunch of extras.

That's kinda what i was thinking.  The guy is asking $1300 for it. It is in about 90% condition. But again preban plays a big roll in price here in ct. Thanks.

I paid $750 for one a few years ago in Florida.  It had been used very little and it shoots better that my new Springfield M1A.  I spent another $150 on a USGI flash hider/bayonet lug, surplus stock and hand guard.

Hoffman's had a sort of rough looking Chinese M-14 clone a year ago for like $850.

Center sports?

Yes, center. My son is interested in putting it in an ebr stock. But I think it's a bit high for its condition.

$1,300 is way too high.  I've never seen one over $800, which is what makes them the best value in preban rifles.

Ok, I know that rifle.  He's had it about two months there.  It has a scope mount, but I don't know who makes it.  I don't think it has a rear sight, so you may be able to use that a negotiation point.  Overall, it looks pretty nice and that is a USGI stock with cutouts for the fire selector.  I think it has other USGI parts on it, but I'm far from knowledgable on the M-14.  I don't know what it is worth, but I don't think it would hurt to make an offer.  I shop there regularly, and understand that they at least will listen to reasonable offers.  If I was in the market for a pre-ban .308, I would already have made an offer on it myself.

Good luck!   They don't come up for sale everyday.

They do on gunbroker

This one looks nice, comes w/scope mount, rings and a cheap bushnell scope- buy now is $989. Couple hundred more for a new bolt and some milspec parts and you got a real nice rifle for less than the price of a springfield. Springfields quality is hit or miss.

I would like to know how you tell a poly tech is preban?  I ask because a m1a is most likely my next rifle.

They were no longer imported after 89

Although they were banned from import in their original configuration in 1989, they were imported without a flash hider and bayonet lug until 1994 just like the MAK90 and BWK92.  The serial number on mine puts its production in 1993 and I debanned it with the required US parts.  Very easy to do with an M14.

Thank you for the follow through. I did not know they were imported after 89 and I was to lazy to look. Many M14 parts out there to be made 944 compliant!

For $1300? Grab a springer and skip the pistol grip upgrades.

The receivers were hard, bolt was a shade softer than GI, springs were not good according to an old attempt at a 10k torture test.

Springfield is hit or miss these days , I don't think they are using mil spec surplus parts anymore. I have one that's at least 25 yrs old, I have not shot it in years.

Thanks for the info guys, I have a preban 308 already, but my son was in the market. Going to do some more research on these things, I am new to the M1A/M14 arena. Would be a cool project.

Yes it would!

Stop back when you folks make some progress.  Always cool to see what others are doing.

Hansens in Southport has a Norinco hanging on the wall. It's been "neutered" (bayonet lug ground off, no flash hider, no mag) I think he's asking $775 for it. Being a Norinco it's preban.
