Walther P22 and Ruger 10/22 (long rifle)
Can a handgun have a threaded barrel? No silencer yet, but can I buy a handgun with a threaded barrel without issue? and How do I go about getting a silencer for my 10/22, do I need a stamp? Sorry for the nubile questions, I haven't looked into any of this stuff before. Thanks ETA: I was just told today is national IPA day. WTF!!! Why didn't anybody tell me this!?!? |

No problem with a threaded pistol barrel.
You can either go to a store locally, pick out a can, fill out the paperwork and wait for the stamp to come back in 6 months, or you can buy the can online, wait a few weeks/months for that dealer to send it to the local dealer (they have to get approvals to move the can between them) and then fill out the paperwork and wait for the stamp to come back in 6 months. It's faster to find the can locally, but you'll usually pay more between a higher markup and tax (even considering the transfer fee they'll charge you if you buy it elsewhere). I've done it both ways, it just depends on your patience and pocketbook. Check out the NFA section in the Armory...there's a TON of information in there along with online vendor recommendations. |

Zerg,
Rimfire silencers are awesome. The paperwork is easy as previously mentioned. A good dealer will pretty much walk you through it. Buy the can, the dealer will fill out the paperwork. Then go get a passport photo, have your police chief sign the ATF Form 4, get your fingerprints done, and a check for $200 to Dept of Justice. You need everything but the check in duplicate, so 2 sets of prints, 2 ATF Form 4's signed by the Chief. Mail this off to the ATF, wait 6 months, and the dealer will call you when the stamp comes in the mail. As to what silencer to get, and where to get it, best advice is that you get what you pay for, and to buy something in stock, or already on it's way to the dealer (ATF Form 3). AAC Element, Silencerco Sparrow SS, SWR Specter II are all very quiet, and will last a lifetime of shooting and cleaning. Slightly cheaper and more common is the Gemtech Outback IID, which has some aluminum components and will not be quite as durable or quiet. You are paying a $200 tax no matter what can you get, so get a good one. Personally, I'd go with the Element or Sparrow SS, both about $450-$550. Don't let anybody tell you that all .22LR cans are the same. That might had been true 20 years ago. It certainly is not true now. As far as what dealer to do this with, do the business with either JoJo's in Southington, or Joel Cramer of Remarcable Arms. Joel doesn't have a storefront, but will walk you through the process top to bottom with 1st class service. If you chose to buy the can from an out of state outfit, you will have a longer wait, and added cost of transferring through a local class III dealer, so best bet is to go through either of these two guys. |

Holy shit that is quiet!! Will I need an individual Form 4 (fees, signatures etc) for each silencer, or is it like a permit? Thank you both for the replies! Ill have to bury my face in the Armory tomorrow after work. It's a stamp actually. Like a big postage stamp. It goes right on the same Form 4 that you send to the ATF. Thats why you send two sets of everything. They keep one, you get one back. You need to do the process to obtain a stamp for each silencer. So that is a new set of fees, signature, prints, pics, etc, each time you buy or make a silencer, MG, destructive device, short barrel rifle or shotgun. You can avoid doing the prints, pics, and signature if you set up a legal trust, but that is probably not worth the cost and regular filing unless you plan on owning a lot of Class 3 stuff, or your CLEO is a twat and won't sign your forms. The $200 tax is paid regardless. |
