| I just recently got stationed in ME(Active duty navy, VA residency) and was wondering if someone could give me a brief synopsis of the process I would have to go through to get a carry permit in ME. |

Thanks for your service. All the info and form can be found here: http://www.maine.gov/dps/msp/licenses/weapons_permits.html You should be able to get a Resident license without any problem. |

I just went to the local Police Department, most towns issue thier own and do it slightly differently. If you meet the state guidelines you are ok by the town, they are less strict if anything. If your town does not have a PD they you go to the town office, sometimes they do them for you. If they don't do it, then you send in directly to the state. It's all the same paperwork the only thing that really changes is who is requesting the background check on you. It does tend to be faster if you go local compared to going to the state.
Check out the link posted to get a head start on what you will need, all the requirements are listed. |
| FYI, just found out today that if you are active duty military, the Town of Kittery requires a letter from the your base commander approving the issue of a permit along with all of the other usual required paperwork. Apparantley its some kind of agreement the town has with the shipyard here. Why is it everywhere i get stationed makes it a hassel to get a permit? Granted, this isn't as difficult as my last duty station, bt it is still pretty frustrating. If only my VA permit was good here... |

I could be wrong, but I don't know that a local PD has any authority to deny a permit if you don't give them an "approval letter". It may be easier for you to just get the letter, but there certainly isn't anything in the statutes about it. Do you anticipate any problem in acquiring the letter? I assume that they will accept your military training as something that satisfies the training requirement? ETA: wait...are you keeping your residency in VA? If so then you can get a non-resident permit without a problem...you would be dealing with the state police and it they have their stuff together. You don't even need to deal with jittery PD if you are keeping your residency in VA. Do you like Mexican food? Loco Coco's right up the road from the yard is a good little spot....I'm sure you've already found Kittery Trading Post. Let me know of you have any questions about the area. |

Thanks, I'll give the non-resident a try. I'm pretty sure you're right about the PD and the base not having that authority, but I also know I don't have the time or resources to fight it, especially when there ar eother options available. And yes, I have tried Loco Coco's. Pretty good food. |

Turnaround wasn't too bad either. The lady that answers the phone can help you with any questions. |
| Something that i find to be a pain in the ass is you need to take some sort of firearms training course to get a maine ccw permit. I live in nh and i contacted maine state police to ask if my NH ccw permit would be valid for the purpose of showing proof of firearm safety. ( I know in NH we dont need to take a class but other states require a class and on the Maine forum i saw an exemption if you have a ccw in another state. NH doenst work though because we dont have to take a class) |
| I had no problem getting my non-resident ME permit. I did show firearms training since I've taken and teach the NRA Home Firearms Safety Course and also have been fairly extensively trained by several well known instructors. I know it's going overboard, but I send a photocopy of every certificate I have with any non-resident permit I apply for to show firearms training. I've never run into a problem yet. I'm filling out my CT and FL tonight. |

See thats the difference you have taken firearms safety courses and classes. I just dont want to spend the money. I only work in maine and they dont like guns on the yard haha. I had to take the NRA Home Firearms Safety class in order to become an instructor. Here in MA, we have to show proof of education to get an LTC and the HFS class is an approved course. It's a good side business putting on the classes, and I do them for at least $20 less than everybody else that I know, just as a service to get more people licensed as gun owners. The rest of the classes I've taken have all been shooting classes. I know you don't want to spend the money on a safety class, but if you want an LTC for someplace that has an education requirement, it's a small investment. |
