Just got back from my hunt and it was everything I had hoped for!
I booked with shootamoose.com and they did a fantastic job putting me into position to see moose. The weather was not great, swirling winds, rainy, but the sign was everywhere. One hour into day two we watched two bulls creep into a cut, the swirling wind had them looking pretty nervous. I picked the one I wanted and then waited for a decent shot. Amazing how they can keep you from having an open shot. I was able to keep the adrenaline in check for the most part, but I was a little nervous when he slid through an opening and I took the shot. 202 yard shot with my DPMS LR-308 loaded with 180grain Interbonds dropped him where he stood. I was shocked to see him drop like a stone after hearing the story in camp the night before about another hunter requiring multiple shots with a custom 338. 42.5" spread and 620 pounds is certainly not a monster Bull Moose, but I was extremely happy with the results. I cannot imagine what a 1,200lb moose looks like! Highly recommend putting in for a permit, it was the hunt of a lifetime!

Nice job. I used to see them quite often when I was deer hunting. I had one young bull let me walk to well within 100 feet of him and he would trot off. We played follow the leader for about an hour before we went out separate ways. Also seen a cow with her calf but she was pretty shy and I didn't try getting close to her. I had a friend get a moose years ago that dressed at almost 880# if IIRC. He could actually crawl up inside the chest cavity and you couldn't see him.
Those things are big and great eating. |
