| It's open house this weekend for a number of small Maple Sugar houses this weekend. The sap has been running for about 2 weeks, and according to the local sugar house, it looks a lot better than last year. Production seems to be up, and looks like it might continue for a few more weeks, at least in So. NH. Picked up my 1/2 gallon of Grade B Dark, 1/2 gallon of Grade A Dark (my wife's favorite) as well as some maple butter and maple cream, so I'm set for the year. |

I tried it for the first time this year.
Tapped three trees, but only got decent sap from two of them. The Red Maple gave almost no sap - I'm not sure whether it was the tree or the way that I inserted the stile. I'm not sure what kind of maples the other two trees were - I'll have to wait until the leaves come out to be sure. I only processed about 10 gallons of sap. I was using a 5-gallon stainless steel pot to boil the sap, with the propane burner from a turkey fryer. It takes forever to boil down the sap that way. Next year I'll put together a more capable evaporator with a greater surface area. |

Just got back from here. Beautiful area of the country if you've never had a chance to visit. I lived about an hour east before moving to CT. http://www.highlandcounty.org/maple.htm |
