The GSG-5 barrel goes all the way though the can that you see. The muzzle is visible from the front of the gun although I don't condone looking in from that general direction.

So something like the coharie with a shorter barrel under the fake can is a no go?

Yep, they're fine.  That's a barrel extension to get you to 16.1" when it's permanently attached - perfectly legal.

If you're thinking of buying a 9mm clone, be aware that there are a number of documented issues going around right now with the CA94 guns... guns being shipped with incorrect bolt heads (9mm guns with .40 bolt heads) especially as the remaining inventory is getting cleared out.   You can make these guns work (as well as the previous SW and BW versions) but it's a real crapshoot as to how much money, time, and frustration you're going to need to spend to get them to run.  The average one just needs some springs and the extractor & ejector replaced, but as you can see from the link below, there are other guys who have spent hundreds or even thousands of dollars to get them to run reliably.

Compared to purchasing an HK94 (which you can't do in CT since it's a "named" AW) it's still wayyyy cheaper to buy the clone and add the parts you need to get it running.  YMMV

Yes I have seen the problems just trying to fiure out weather to go the CA route or get the USC and convert it to an ump with the stock pined to make it CT legal.
I dont know if its worth the money at this point to go after either
