I am originally from FL and currently stationed in Newport, RI.

I'm hoping to do some hunting while I'm here for the next year, but I have no clue where to start around here. I know some people might be a bit hesitant to give out their spots. But a push in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

I'm hoping to hunt ... deer, turkey, dove, and pheasant while I'm here.

Thanks in advance!

What state are you hoping to hunt in?  While you are based in RI, there are many more places to hunt in VT, NH or ME.

If I were you, I'd try to hunt a few weekends (at least for deer) in NH.  It's only 1.5 hours from Smithfield to Southern NH and NH gives you the benefit of hunting both Saturdays & Sundays.  Since it's the only New England state that offers this advantage, it may make sense despite the out of state license.  Once you get North of Manchester, you can take 28 North and you will find hundreds of acres of open land and friendly owners who would be not only happy to allow you to hunt, but will also give you some tips and even show you where they have seen deer.  I was shocked at how friendly everyone is - it really is amazing.  Also, Bear Brook State Park runs along 28 and is a good spot for bow hunting.

If NH is too far, you may want to consider MA.  Westboro has a wildlife area where they stock pheasant, but as you can imagine it gets kinda crazy on opening day.  The farther west you go, you will find more spots available for hunting, but it's much tougher to find owners that will let you hunt.  Some of the largest deer I've ever seen were in Eastern MA - Lincoln, Waltham, etc. but it's almost impossible to secure access and if you do, then you get to hunt a 2-3 acre lot and only with a bow.

VT is a lot like NH, but doesn't allow Sunday hunting, so I've always headed to NH.

RI is tough as space is limited and you will see huge hunting pressure everywhere you go.  I only lived in RI for four years during college, so I don't have a ton of experience, but my buddies and I quickly gave up on RI after the first year since there were way more hunters than deer - everywhere we tried.

If I were you, I would start with NH and spend a few weekends up here.  Good luck.

If I was to hunt out of state it would be NH, but I would also have to take leave since I'm an MP and don't have weekends off or normal hours. I was hoping to find something around here in RI that was closer and I could hunt on my days off during the week. Especially since I work 3rds. But NH would definitely be possible during leave.

I'm headed to the RI office on Monday.  I'll ask some co-workers if they know of any good spots and check back in Monday night.

Thank you!

I was thinking about fishing earlier too. There's 3 species I have always wanted to catch that I can't down in FL. Muskie, Pike, and Walleye... any luck up in NH for those?
